“Great stay”

We stayed for 2 nights prior to heading off to Varadero, loved the location, about 20 mins from Old Havana by bus, in a good part of town with a free shuttle bus, we spent a whole day exploring Old Havana, shuttle buses were on time. Hotel is very spacious, room was excellent and staff extremely friendly and helpful. Hotel restaurant was very good, steak was delicious. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise after reading previous reviews with lots to chose from.

Even had time to use the Spa for a massage. Would stay here again.

“Had a Great Time!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We stayed for a week at the end of January and had a wonderful time. The rooms are spacious and clean. The hotel lobby bar and restaurant were great places to get a meal. The pool is nice and the service was great. The breakfast was good with a wide variety of foods to choose from. The free shuttle to Old Havana was great and reliable.

We did a tour into the valley which was a lot of fun. We visited some beautiful spots. It cost 55 pesos each for an 8 hour trip.

There is a great little bistro called Amelia's cafeteria across the street in the business building area. The food was amazing and super cheap! There are two of them in the business complex and the better one is facing 6th Avenue.

We will definitely be returning!!

“Just good enough for Havana”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Being in Havana takes one important thing: "Paciencia" (with a capital P). Also in hotel 5ta Avenida, where just one employee was running the reception and it took half an hour to check-in. (it's tough to be patient at 19.15 and travelling/out of bed since 05.15).

Room was spacy, but scarsely decorated. Nice bath room with separated douche and bath.

Unfortunately no Wifi in the room (but that's standard in Havana) and (worse) no iron/ironing board available.

Also a free bottle of water in the room, instead of in the minibar only would have been a good gesture in a (sub)tropical country.

“Huge Room ...Good Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012
10
people found this review helpful

The hotel located far from Central Havana in a very QUIET upscale neighborhood .The Melia Habana, Panorama ( a sister hotel to this one ) and the Occidental Hotels are close neighbors .The air is fresh .It overlooks the ocean on one side but ther eis no beach .The hotel is "new" but as a reviewer has already commented it has very poor overall construction finishings .The carpets are slapped together at the elevators ..there are cigarette burns in them already . Non Smoking rooms are smoking rooms with the ash trays removed ,You may find an unpleasant odor from the new furniture (glues?) if so ask for anotehr room . The paint and plastering is terrible in some parts of the hotel so ignore it . Excellent Shower ,lots of room .Good bath tub ! Lots of space in the room ..they are HUGE ! Bathroom was cleaned spotlessly everyday .
Suggest that they have weatherproof balcony chairs for the guests .

Lots of shampoo , bath soaps, etc .Excellent towels ! In room safe is simple to use .

Open balcony door or windows will prevent AC from working .

Door men are very friendly and helpful ..good command of English .
Front staff will solve your problems ..just be patient as they do their best ..give them a chance and things will be looked after .Manager is a good guy ...just smile and you will be smiled back big time !
Cleaning staff are very friendly.. if you need something they will get it for you ..give them a tip ..considering that a dentist in Cuba makes only 30USD/MONTH , they make nothing ..the taxi drivers are Havana's middle class rich due to tips!!

No problems with electronic key .Good huge bed ..linen was OK but one day, I had a cigarette hole burned sheet . AC is in a good location in room for sleeping .

Breakfast was improved on my last 2 days there with more choices available ..why ? probably too many complaints from
the previous clients .The eggs are always runny though and undercooked .Bacon was undercooked sometimes .Hot food was not always "hot".
Cereals are really for the kids . Their Imperial brand Tea is terrible so bring your own bags use their hot water from the machine machine .Coffee from the machine coffee is terrible bring your own instant coffee from home .No egg chef while I was there?Get to breakfast early if you want the good pickings .Pineapple was unripe every day . You can fill up on what is available but remember this is Cuba not Europe or North America .
Taxi drivers are not always honest so be careful . The hotel shuttle bus which is used by other hotels in the area had terrible times and you have to walk a long piece to catch the bus back to the hotel from the drop off point ..they should have a different more convenient drop off and pick up point .I used the Havana Hop On Hop Off bus everday to get downtown and back for 5CEC for the WHOLE DAY ..you
get the bus at the Melia Havana on either side of the street ..it runs every 30 min and goes everywhere in Havana .Better than taxis and you see more BUT be sure to ask when the last bus back to the Melia Habana runs as there are 2 Melias in Havana .
There is a bank directly across the street from the Melia as well as 2 grocery stores to get bottled water in the new business plaza ..just ask any taxi driver that is parked on the street .There are numerous eating places in the Plaza ..just explore around you will find them ..one had a whole excellent Pizza for 2CEC .

Melia Habana which is a real 5 star hotel is located straight down the hill you can see the sign from the hotel frontdoor .. you will find reasonably priced excellent food here !
Downstairs at the Melia is Cubanacan Travel ..they provide the same tours and MORE variety of tours at cheaper prices than the agency at Quinta . Travel agency Lady at Quinta is confusing ! All government owned bus tours are operated under the same agency but with different bus names .The Vinales trip is LONG ..but well worth it .I took the bus booked through Cubanacan and stayed 2 nights at Casa Colonial Mercedes which had better meals than the Quinta with EXCELLENT accommodations for 20USD /CEC per night . This is a one way bus ticket as you purchase your retun ticket at the Cubanacan office
at the bus stop in Vinales .no problem at all as everyone in the office speaks some English .Each bus has an English speaking "conductor" along for the ride .
Good comfortable new Chinese buses that are Mercedes Benz Copies without the WC.
In summary a good quiet ,spotlessly clean hotel that is learning the ropes .Good value for the money .If you do not like your room because of smells or noisy fridges etc they will put you in another room maybe even an upgraded room ..no problem ..cannot beat the value for the services provided .
Would return again !

Room Tip: ask for balcony room at rear of hotel away from front street

“First Time to Cuba”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012
4
people found this review helpful

First time stay in Cuba, got a seat sale from Sunwings and wanted to see Havana's history and culture. The hotel is new and very spacious both in public areas and guest rooms.

All rooms have large windows wall to wall or balconyies. If you wish a balcony request it on reservation.

There had been previous negative comments on breakfast buffet but many of these had been cleared up (fresh furit) by the time of my stay. The only negative at breakfast was the instant coffee self served through a machine.

The pool and pool area are spacious and finding a chaise lounge was not a problem. The pool is not heated but once in, it was not a problem. There were two bath towels for pool use in my room.

The location of the hotel is in the Miramar District of Havana. It is a 15 minute cab us ride to Old Havana the tourist center. The hotel provides a shuttle bus at no cost. I used the lobby bar and the patio restaurant during my stay with no complaints. There was live entertainment in the lobby bar the couple of times I was there.

The Miramar area offers other choices of meals through other resort hotels in the area as well as inexpensive local restaurants and stores for bottled water, coffee and other necessities

I was most happy with this hotel as I looked forward to quiet evenings on my return for a full day of sight seeing. It is quiet, clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: specify balcony if required, ocean or city view
