Stayed here for 2 nights after a 12 night stay at Sandals Varadero. We were really hoping for a nice ending to what had been a very underwhelming stay in Cuba; sadly this was not to be the case.
The location is great as it was right in the heart of Old Havana. The entrance to the hotel is very impressive and we loved the Colonial style. We were located in the old part as we had hoped for. Unfortunately, the rooms do not match the entrance. They could have been a typical British style Holiday Inn (or American motel) with a slightly larger bathroom. The floor above and below us had a balcony but ours only had French doors overlooking a side avenue and directly into the restaurant of a building opposite. The pollution from the street meant not having them open very long. The pollution in this City is understandable given the age of the cars but not good if you are asthmatic.
Upon returning from a disastrous meal in the city, we found a buffet restaurant within the hotel (on the new side) but the food was mediocre, lukewarm, uninviting and expensive. Breakfast the next morning resembled a bun-fight. The tables were dirty, there were too few staff and it was crowded and noisy. We waited 20 mins for coffee and tried to serve ourselves but weren’t allowed to. Hot food was of the disgusting lukewarm, uninviting mess that we were becoming accustomed to so left the restaurant hungry again!
The pool on the rooftop has amazing views but was way too cold to swim in. The jacuzzi on the other hand was perfect. The service poolside was very good if you tipped well.
If this is the top rated hotel in Havana, I really wouldn’t want to try any of the others. Regardless of its prime position and grand lobby, the rooms and food are equivalent to around a British 3* but the prices are not.
Be prepared for vendors or beggars directly outside when you leave the hotel, some people cope with this well but I found it incredibly intimidating and upsetting, therefore I could not recommend.
I thought I was good at researching before travelling, I obviously didn't do my job properly for this trip so make sure that you do!
Room Tip: Maybe one on the front of hotel as rooms at the side are not so good.

Dear Reviewer,
First of all I would like to thank you for all the time and effort it took you posting your comments on this site.
However, after carefully reading everything, there are some negative points I would like to clear, when you make a comparison of our rooms, to the Typical British holiday Inn or American Motel (not offense taken or given) it is obvious that everything is going about taste, and on that matter believe me is quite difficult to foreseen what a person wants to find, that is, the main reason sites like this one exists, just for giving the opportunity to the new Guest to find out what the hotel looks like, now for me is not quite clear if it goes about your personal opinion about the room and the Lobby design or were you maybe just expressing your frustration for not having a balcony room?, always it is possible to request a balcony room to the reception desk or at the moment of the booking to clear a simple point like that one with the agency, not mentioning that ancient villages always are dangerous for asthmatic or allergic persons.
About the breakfast you have several points here, for instance, you said that the restaurant was crowded and noisy, you are right the hotel is fully booked and it is impossible to prevent guests talking among them. You waited 20 minutes for having the coffee and dirty tables, lukewarm food, and few personnel, unacceptable for a hotel of our category, we have already discussed all those details, with the involved departments and we ensure that we are already working for definitely solving them, because we are aware that problems like those one deeply affects the Guest satisfaction and our image too, but when you stated; that it was a mediocre buffet I would like you please to write me and explain me in your opinion what mediocre is, because that buffet has a wide range arrangement and variety of food and it is very appreciated and highly rated by all our Guests.
Your rated us as a 3* British, I am not to argue about how many stars we should have, for me good service, quality and standard of the product are the most important issue, the star category only gives you an indication of what to expect and it helps me to establish my rates, once again I would like to point out that any comment would be very appreciated.
Cuba is a very safe country for tourism, but the surroundings are not all the time the bests still when the Guests try to enjoy their journey mostly they do not pay much attention to beggars or vendors since a simple no thank you, it more than enough for stopping their selling or begging actions. I really sorry if that event prevented you of enjoying your last days.
Once again thank you for your comments posted in this review
