Recently stayed as part of a group. At first, the lobby makes for a decent impression, as do the restaurants on the main floor. You get to your room, and if you're fortunate to have a high floor and great view, you're still felling good. And then reality sets in: Lobby is smokey, lounge chairs are stained with grime and flies are everywhere. Back in your guest room, you take a closer look and paint is peeling off of walls and ceilings, in some places revealing visible mold. A friend of mine's room was so bad the mold had grown its own cultures, like tiny mushroom clusters. He took a picture using his smart-phone to show others as proof. Each day inside the guest room your clothes take on more and more of the damp, mildewy and moldy smell. Room cleanliness was terrible: cobwebs; stains on upholstery and bedding; bathroom floor hadn't been swept or wiped from last guests; carpeting not vaccumed. In the week I was there I never heard a maid run a vacuum cleaner.
Being international tourists to the country and hotel, I can say service was OK. Restaurant maitre'd, hostesses and servers were cheerful and accomodating. Maids were upbeat and tried to engage in conversation. But then again, some of that has to be chalked up in their incentive to curry favor for tips, which are an important part of their earnings because of the way the government controls wages.
The hotel's location isn't ideal either: while you're right on the water, there really isn't anywhere to walk to. Cab rides would be essential to get anywhere.
There's a small market 1 block away in a building which contained a small cafe, grocery store and restaurant on the second level called the "Jazz Cafe" for dinner. DON'T go there. Severe food poisoining can and does happen and I can attest to this. I went with 2 friends; they had no issues, but I did. Not worth it.
The small grocery store did have some welcome basics, like pop, crackers and candy bars.
Finally, one saving grace about the hotel was the on-site spa. One room, run by a male physician, who did provide a pretty competent medical rubdown (massage).
All in all, I have to say "stay away". I had no choice; the hotel was picked by our tour group's director. Had I done my own reviews, I would've stayed elsewhere and gladly paid any differential to do so.
