“In need of sympathetic refurbishment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

We stayed here for two nights as part of a package. We found staff to be efficient and helpful. The room was perfectly serviceable (we slept well), even though the fixtures and fittings were showing their age and the window didn't open. The breakfast buffet was excellent - on a par with some of the best hotels I have stayed in anywhere in the world. Moreover, I have nowhere else had breakfast accompanied by live piano music - a nice touch.

As other reviewers have indicated, the lifts can be slow and unreliable, and the whole place is showing its age (built 1958) and could do with a major refurbishment.

“Don't stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We were booked for 4 nights, arrived midnight to unfriendly staff and a room that already had people sleeping in it, returned to be told the hotel was full but was sent to a second room which also already had someone sleeping in it. Third time we asked for the Manager who got us a room that was empty because the airconditioning wasn't working.

The hallways stink, paint is falling off the walls and the carpet is damp and stained (Manager's response? 'Well its an old hotel').

The room was okay, plain and clean. The bathroom was poor - rusted and the ceiling drips on you whilst you sit on the toilet.

The staff are unfriendly and almost rude - you feel sorry for them though, due to the poor quality of the facility they must spend all their time dealing with unhappy guests and they don't have the power to do anything about it.

Lucky for us we'd already had 3 lovely weeks in great hotels all over Cuba so we knew this was not normal. Even luckier, the Hotel Nacional had space so we checked out after our first night and had 3 amazing nights there instead!

“Hotel should be condemned”

We had the misfortune of staying here for 1 night in January (only because all other hotels were fully booked). This place doesn't seem to know the meaning of maintenance, and would definitely be closed down in other countries. The corridors in the hotel were horrible with stained, stinking carpet, plaster falling off the walls and black mould happily growing on the walls. You could say well this is Havana, but we also stayed at The Nacionale and Parque Central and neither of them had any of these problems. The buffet breakfast was like some kind of frenzy, with people everywhere and very average looking food. As we only stayed one night we only had to use the lift twice, and I felt lucky to escape with my life. The lifts are so slow and old and scary given the obvious lack of maintenance. I certainly would never stay here again.

“Stay only if all Havana hotels are fully booked!”

My wife and l stayed there for only 2 nights and that was enough for us to hate it. It was originally built as Hilton than has been taken over during the revolution and probably has been renovated only a few times. It is very old and it is not being taken care of at all. Food was disaster, l cant describe how horrible my steak was in the fine dining room. We literally starved there! Bed was so annoying, could not sleep at all. Bell boy was asking for money for moving the bags for 1 meter! l would be perfectly fine if l was alone, but l had my wife with me and l insisted on this hotel. We only liked the breakfast, it was kind of ok. But again l got food poisoned as soon as we checked out and had to go to Hospital emergency when we came back to Cayman Islands. In short, Havana is a wonderful place where everyone should see but Havana Libre is definitely not a hotel to stay! Shame that its run by a big Spanish company!

“Awful Hotel”

We had 4 nights on a Highlights of Cuba tour ,on 3 days there was no hot water in our room on the 13th floor ,corridors had filthy carpets and smelled. I dont think windows and brasswork has been cleaned for years. This must have been a nice hotel years ago but to say its tired is being kind.

Room Tip: I do not know of anyone who was happy with their room.
