“Amazing value for the price!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

At 35CUCs you cant go wrong. This is a penthouse with stunning views. Evora is a sweet woman who is quite helpful. She lent us a guide book one day to help us find what we wanted and made some calls for us to help organize things.

The room was a great size and when we went, we did not need to use the AC.

The bathroom was my only issue. The water was not always hot and the bathroom didn't feel super clean. maybe it was only because the fixtures were old.

For cuba, you probably will not get any better at this price. I would go back and stay here.

“Nice location, amazing views.”

Stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our 2 week trip to Cuba. It was a nice introduction to the country, as the location was perfect to get a lay of the land from the balcony, and taxis could always find the place.
Our room was more than adequate in size , very large bathroom as well, tons of closet space. There was an AC that quickly cooled the room down, then the fan was adequate for the night. The room was quiet until morning traffic below- but not a bother.

The only complaint about the room was the slightly irregular hot water for the shower- though compared to other places in Cuba, it was still very nice.

Evora was not there during our stay- and I do think that for this reason we missed out on the B&B feel of the place. Her husband was very nice, though only present on arrival and exit. One of the morning ladies was not my favorite person- she spoke so quietly and seemed as though as she would be helpful, but was not unless I insisted (such as making a phone call to my next casa).

If you do not need a lot of help with information, and want a very comfortable place, with a difficult to beat view, this is the top choice!
When there are others from the casa around, there is good information sharing, there are books to use from others, etc.

I did appreciate the water cooler with filtered water, as throughout the rest of my trip the casas had water for purchase only.

As far as food- the $5 breakfast is worth it for the abundance of fruit. Downstairs there is a cafe with just as cheap egg meals, great coffee. Some mornings there is no one in the casa to do breakfast.

Everyone around recommends the Restaurant Castropol around the corner from Evora, on the Malecon. We found this place to be pretentious, poor service, and the food without flavor. There are so many other places to find good local food, so I would skip this place.

“Great location and lovely staff”

This is a great casa in a great location (just out of the hubbub but near enough to everything). Our family had two rooms for 3 nights. Rooms very good, good bathroom/showers etc. Absolutely fabulous "common room" of about 25m long! with various sitting areas and great balcony. In the absence of Evora, Mercie (spelling?) had perfect English and was an excellent host. Excellent breakfast. Very friendly and overall a great experience of a casa.

Room Tip: Overlook the malecon.

“Penthouse living!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We stayed at Evora’s for a total of three nights: two nights at the start of our trip around Cuba and again for the last night before we flew out.

I’m honestly not sure where else you’d be able to stay in such an amazing 9th floor penthouse for such an affordable price. Located near the intersection of the Malecon and Prado, the building was finished around the time of the Revolution with Casa Evora still having that 1950’s charm! The bedrooms are roomy and all have clean functional ensuites (with decent showers), air con, fridge and TV.

The large balcony which runs almost the full length of the building was the perfect place to sit in the late afternoon for a beer or some Havana Club while watching people on the Prado and boats coming and going in the harbour. The views across the old city and harbour were simply breathtaking.

For CUC 5 extra you also get a great breakfast of pancakes, fruit, bread, coffee and fruit juice.

The building is 1950’s, and so are the two lifts. It wasn’t uncommon to see one of the two lifts out of service or running in darkness with the lights not working. And while we did see someone have to jump out of the lift after it got stuck between floors, all the other positives of Casa Evora were too strong for that small issue to sway my opinion!

Evora was extremely helpful in terms of calling Casa’s in other towns for us, arranging taxi’s and providing local dinner recommendations. Evora speaks flawless fluent English.

We paid CUC 35 for a double and CUC 40/45 on our second stay for a room with two doubles.

I’d recommend Casa Evora without hesitation.

“Amazing views, great rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

We stayed for three nights in two of Evora's spotless penthouse rooms. Both bedrooms had full private bathrooms, and hot water. The beds were comfortable, and the views from the windows were fabulous. But the views from the main terrace were even better - right over the old town, up to the Capitolio, across to the Malecon, amazing.

Breakfast was served in the dining area, alongside the terrace and the view. Fresh fruit, guava smoothies, coffee/tea, pancakes, and bread and honey/jam. All yummy and plentiful. It was a chance to chat with other guests too, which was fun. Note it costs extra (room only is about 35 CUC, breakfast is 5 CUC per person, I think) but is well worth it.

The location is hard to beat - easy walking distance to the old town and right by the Malecon. Perfect for a short stay, and probably fine for longer if you wanted to tackle public transport to other parts of Havana, or take taxis.

Evora herself was lovely too, sorting out a taxi to collect us in the middle of our last night, when we had to catch an early morning flight. The lift to the ninth floor was probably the worst bit of the whole experience - creaky and flimsy looking, but it did the job!

We would more than happily stay here again, haste luego Evora.
