Casa Luis was the first casa particular we stayed in on our arrival in Cuba, and a nice introduction to the country and the people. Luis is friendly (though a little stiff) and informative and his family and staff were very welcoming and friendly as well, though the casa didn't have the personal feeling that I had in several casas I stayed in subsequently. Maybe because it was Havana, maybe because the casa is more established and "professional."
The casa is beautiful, with its colonial decor, stained glass, and antiques. There's a lovely patio for drinks and conversation. Our room was comfortable but enclosed in the interior of the building with no windows, so we had to have the fan and/or air conditioning on all the time, which made it noisy for sleeping. The bathroom was large and well functioning. Meals were quite good and very plentiful, if a little pricey compared to other casas we stayed in subsequently (though one dinner included Spanish wine and one included beer) . The neighborhood is definitely "real," rather than "tourist" Havana--fairly run down but with people sitting on their stoops or strolling through the streets at all hours, making it feel very safe. It's just a block from the Malecon, so perfectly placed for evening strolls, and easy to get around by foot or bus. I would definitely recommend this casa.
