“Shocking at first - but could get used to it”

We were referred to this casa because the one we had booked was cancelled a few days prior to arrival, while in Cuba already, so we didn't know where we were going.

When the taxi stopped we didn't really want to get out because the narrow street with plenty of people and buildings falling apart was quite shocking. The owner's son was waiting for us and helped with the luggage. He said we couldn't get the en-suite room we had been promised for the first night, but could move there the next day, so we got a smaller one upstairs instead and had to use the shared toilet/bathroom downstairs. There was no window (behind the curtain) nor a balcony or fridge. There was a small roof-top terrace which was actually the remains of a former building which had collapsed but you could still see where the windows used to be but the roof was missing. It was really weird. So that was the view. We were really shocked so we decided to spend only one night here and started to look for another casa for the other 3 nights. We found a lot nicer one on the Malecon for the same price but by the evening we started to get used to the city and figured out that our accommodation has a better location than the one on the Malecon, as this one is right in the Old Town so it's close to most of the sights. At night there was music from the bars nearby and it was great to sit on the terrace, have some cocktails and listen to the "voices and noises" of Havana. So we decided to stay. The next morning we got the en-suite room, which was bigger and also had a fridge (but still no window behind the curtain) so it was more confy and spent the last 3 nights there. There was no housekeeping at all while we were there, not even the bins were emptied. However, the owner had a maid who spent there a few hours a day. Strange. We also had to buy our own toilet paper. It was the only casa during our stay in Cuba where there was no breakfast or dinner offered. It would have been nice to have a chat with them but the owner lady couldn't speak any English at all. Her son had quite good English but he was either on the phone or in his room. They were not really friendly.

All in all, we had a great time in Havana and I don't mind that finally we ended up here and spent 4 nights here. The best thing here was the terrace where we could enjoy a drink and have a special Cuban feeling with salsa music and the weird view. We'd go back but this casa is only good for theose who want to feel REAL Havana.

“This place is a dump!!”

The house was not clean, nor did the owner clean, a cleaning lady came in 3 times in 10 days, we got clean towels 3 times. There was a Rooster that crowed at all hours of day and night!! No balcony to sit on. The rooms were full of the owners things...she did clean out 2 drawers in the dresser. The refridge, but 2 shelves, was full of the owners things and the second room has no fridge at all. We purchased our own toilet paper. She entered our rooms constantly without knocking. This could have all been forgotten had the owner been nice and friendly......I never saw her smile. On the positive she was very knowledgable about the city and its goings on and can draw a great map.
