My girlfriends and I decided to celebrate our 30th birthdays in Bermuda. Based on some of the reviews we had read online and in guide books, we decided that Greene's Guest House seemed like a relatively decent alternative to the much pricier resort hotels that had rates of $350+/night during peak season. Let me preface this entry by saying that the three of us are a well-traveled bunch and are not overly fussy when it comes to accommodations-- all we expect is something that is clean, safe and in a decent location. Greene's Guest House was none of these things. We arrived from the airport at 11pm and the guest house was locked so we couldn't get in. It was only after our taxi driver leaned on his horn several times that someone came to the front door to let us in. The entire guest house, including our room, smelled like mildew. Our bed linens were stained, all of the bath towels had holes and were stained and the shower had such little water pressure that it seemed to take ages to wash the shampoo out of our hair. Although there was a phone in the room, it was not possible to make any outgoing local calls without first calling the lady who ran the guest house. She would then dial and connect the call on our behalf. So whenever this lady was not at home and we needed to call a cab to take us to the beach or to town, we could not do so. The guest house was also not as centrally located as we were led to believe. The so-called 15 minute stroll to Horseshoe Bay took nearly 50 minutes. As a result, we spent close to $80 per day taking cabs to/from the beaches and to/from town. The guest house also had some rather strange people staying there. On the fourth day of our stay, we started to receive harrassing phone calls from a male guest in the room next door who wanted to speak to the "pretty blond girl" in our room. In addition, there was no alarm clock and while they promised us a 5am wake up call the morning of our flight, the wake up call never happened. Bermuda is absolutely beautiful and I would certainly recommend a trip there but be warned--Greene's Guest House is an absolute hell hole. And staying there made our trip a lot less enjoyable.
