From the moment I emailed the owners, I knew that I would be treated well. Their prompt and accommodating reply reassured this last-minute traveller that I was making the right choice in accommodations on Bermuda.
I hadn't visited Bermuda since 1964 and our last minute decision found us scrambling for hotel accommodations. As usual, I checked the reviews on TripAdvisor and then made a few calls to B&Bs on the island. The last fellow who told me he was fully booked recommended Greenbank and said that we would be very comfortable there...and we were.
The owners are wonderful cheery folks; David is Bermudian and his wife, Cindy, is from Long Island, NY. They're busy the whole day through, as is their uber-friendly staff, taking care of the guesthouse and grounds. The entire staff is accommodating and, like most Bermudians, quite chatty.
We rented a waterfront cottage. It's bathroom was clean and came with a smallish shower, sink, toilet and window. The bedroom was approximately 14 x 16 and was equipped with two twins, joined together to form a king, two nightstands, 3 lamps, a handling closet with shelves and safe, a double dresser and two comfortable chairs. The kitchenette was in a separate little room with a stainless steel unit that contained a small refrigerator, sink and 2-burner electric cooktop. This was set amidst lower and upper cabinets which were stocked with basic cooking and serving utinsils, plates, etc. All-in-all a nice little set up for two.
The grounds are as lush as any tropical island might be with all sorts of palms and interesting flora found on Bermuda. The lawns are extensive and serve as part of the "patio" upon which chaise lounges are set; some with umbrellas. Each unit has a table and chairs set upon an outside patio as well and each has a small barbecue grill with briquettes and lighter fluid provided by the owners.
Greenbank is set upon the harbor. They have a nice dock from which we swam daily with the local fishes (bring your snorkel gear) which seemed quite friendly. Don't be alarmed when some of the larger varieties chase after the smaller one; it's likely time for a snack or dinner...swim on! Bermuda has sharks, but they rarely come into the harbor since the cruise ships are no longer permitted to dump their trash into it (can you image?). Instead, the sharks prefer a life well off Bermuda; in the reefs that surround the island's permitter.
Life at Greenbank is casual; flip-flops and t-shirts. Life, in the heat of the summer, is also casual on Bermuda, but you'll want to step up your dress code if dining out. In very hot months a polo shirt and shorts are sufficient. Do you need to wear Bermuda Shorts? I think not, but you don't want to wear cut-off jeans in Bermudian restaurants.
Foreigners (non-Bermudians like you and me) are not permitted to rent "cars". We are permitted to rent mo-peds, but take my advice and use public transportation and the multitude of taxi cabs unless you are an experience mo-ped driver...especially after dark. Bermudians are aggressive drivers and their cars barely fit onto the winding roadways; some of which can hardly take a car and moped side-by-side. This is no time for machismo and silly tricks. INstead, rely upon the public transportation. It is superb and frequent. Best of all, the ferry stops one short block from Greenbank, which you find to be incredibly convenient. Be sure to get a bus/ferry pass from the Ferry Terminal on Front Street. They're the best bargain on Bermuda.
While in Bermuda, don't forget to spend time walking the historic back streets of St. George. I see everyone rushing through this magnificent little community with far too much haste. There's plenty of time to shop, have lunch in any number of good eateries (some of which I've reviewed) and then take the public bus back to Hamilton or your hotel.
If you're looking for luxury or high-level service, Greenbank is not for you. But if you like nice people and comfortable surroundings, it's your place and it's quite a bargain, too. BTW...there are no TVs in the rooms; only the reception. This if a wonderful base for an extended stay, getting away from the madness of the world and simply relaxing.
