Trip Advisor reviews that we read on the Fourways makes us wonder about the validity of Trip Advisor reviews. That being said:
Restaurant - Wonderful food and staff...dessert souffles are to die for, incredibly talented pianist.."Salvio."
Cottages - hard to even understand the relationship with the cottages and restaurant. Kind of like the difference between Heaven and Hell.
It took us two days to get over the shock of how dirty our cottage was and the nightly task of killing a variety of sizes and numerous roaches. While not finding them under the bed covers, we frequently brushed them off the spread. Also found them in our luggage; when packing to leave we will have to shake our luggage out and hoped they haven't laid eggs.
The tile floors throughout were filthy. Any mopping done seems to consist of pushing very dirty water into room and cabinet corners to dry into a mound of sludge. Toilet set was sticky when you lifted the lid. Towels were worn, dirty and gray.
Previous bathroom water leaks have not been repaired properly and unit reeks of mold/mildew.
Laundry Service - we had a small amount of laundry we needed to have done; no laundry bags in room. My husband called the front desk several times and no one answered; he also went to the front office several times and could not locate anyone to speak with. When he finally did (two days later) he was told they don't have laundry service and if we could catch the maid, maybe she would be willing? Vague and unhelpful and we felt that they probably weren't paying their bills and local laundries would not provide service to them.
We found several laundry/dry cleaners in Yellow Pages; all ads stating they would provide pick up and delivery service to hotels.
We understand the humid island climate; however we have been to other islands and have also lived in very humid places as well.Roaches and other bugs, and mold and mildew quickly become a big issue if ignored and not addressed promptly and diligently.
It was apparent to us that the owners or investors are putting all their money in the restaurant and letting the cottages go (actually, they've already gone). We finally decided, even though there was a 21-day cancellation policy that we would find another place, even if we had to pay for the rest of our stay at the Fourways and a new hotel somewhere else.
We found very CLEAN and hospitable boutique hotel in Hamilton, Rosedon, (after a recommendation from two other travelers that were also moving out of the Fourways to the Rosedon) with a very helpful staff and far more amenities (including an excellent laundry service); a FULL breakfast, afternoon tea, Rum Swizzler Nights on Tuesdays with hor d'ouerves and entertainment. Room service lunch and light dinners were also available. Staff could not have been friendlier and more helpful.
When we packed up and checked out of the Fourways, the manager apologized and said they were having issues with their maids (I don't think the maids would be responsible for spraying/treating roaches or for poor maintenance and overall rundown dinginess of units, including piles of broken equipment, old mops piled behind the cottages). He was at least gracious enough not to charge us for the day we checked out and for the other nights of our booked stay.
This was apparently also not the best time to travel to Bermuda . Rainy season and we only saw the sun a couple times. We could deal with the rain, but not a filthy hotel or over 90% of the businesses closed for the holidays. A majority of island businesses close down from December 23 through January 4 and in some cases through March. We rode the local buses and taxis, but did not get to do much shopping for souvenirs as everything was closed. St. George only had a small grocery store open...tourists were wandering around the town very puzzled. A couple of the local taxi drivers told us that Bermuda was struggling severely economically and that several cruise ships had taken Bermuda off their list of stops. Bermuda does not export any products so everything is imported and expensive. We were also frequently warned about island crime - break-ins into hotel rooms; murders and shootings.
Our next Caribbean trip will be back to a far more amenable Antigua.
Room Tip: Don't book a room at the Fourways; their somewhat out of the way location is not the reason they...
