“Wasted Potential”

This resort has such potential. It is such a shame. It ON THE BEACH in Bermuda (a rarity for Bermuda) but the potential is completely wasted on the fact that the rooms and overall facility have not been updated in YEARS. Think wicker and '80s style drapes/linens. Our comfortor was old (i.e. dirty) and the bedside lamp was broken. The hotel hasn't seen a reno in many years -- the door locks used actual keys (this would be cute if these were cute cotteges or something, but they aren't...this is just an example of how dated the place is). And then there were the bugs. Sigh. Such a waste.

Pros: The best parts of the stay here were a) as mentioned, this "resort" is on Elbow Beach (which is one of the nicest beaches in Bermuda since it isn't as busy) with lovely views and b) you can walk next door for dinner on the beach at Elbow Beach resort (beautiful). Note: It seemed like no guests actually ate at Coco Reef.

Cons: This place really skeeved us out. We had a 4-night trip and decided to switch to a different hotel after 2 nights. We are SO glad we did this because we just were not enjoying our stay at Coco Reef.

“Good Hotel, Great Views, Helpful and Friendly Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

My wife and I stayed here for a week on vacation over Christmas. We were offered an upgrade to a beach/ocean front room in building 200 when we checked in. We had a balcony with great views of the beach and ocean. Building 100 also has beach/ocean front rooms. This was a relatively quiet time of year in Bermuda, with few tourists, so the hotel had very few guests when we stayed there. Other reviewers had mentioned problems connecting to the internet via WiFi and we were told when we arrived that there was no WiFi connection in the rooms, only in the reception area. My experience was that there was a WiFi connection in our room on most days but occasionally the signal went away. There are also two computers and a printer available for guest use at no charge in the reception area. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. We had one meal in the restaurant, a lunch on the day we checked out. The food and service in the restaurant were good on that occasion. We had a small fridge and microwave oven in our room (microwave ovens are available on request at no extra cost). There is a supermarket 10 minutes walk away from the hotel that sells food and alcoholic beverages. It has an ATM outside. There are bus stops near the supermarket. Buses run frequently (every 15-30 minutes) to Hamilton and the Dockyards. We would definitely stay here again, especially if we were visiting Bermuda in the off season.

“Very dated...”

My wife and I decided to spend five nights in Bermuda, amd selected Coco Reef as our destination. After having read the reviews by others on Tripadvisor, our expectations were not too high. Coco Reef lived up to those low expectations. We weren't in our room for more than half an hour when were "suprised" by a cock roach about 3 centimetres in length. The shower didn't work and there was no hot hotter. Needless to say, we changed rooms.

We decided to dine at Cafe Coco, the main restuarant. I had ordered the famous Bermuda Fish Chowder, and after an hour after having been seated, the chowder still had not arrived. Oddly enough, other patrons who arrived after we did, had received there meals. As one group of departing patrons having already dined stated as they walked by our table, "a lot of people have come and gone since you were seated". I never did get the chowder I ordered and it was explained to us that there was a technical disconnect in how the servers order the food and how the kitchen staff recieve it. We also came to learn that it happens fairly routinely. I found it rather odd that the servers hadn't noticed that they were bringing meals to patrons who had orderd after us and not to my wife and I.

Having said that, admittedly, most of the staff were wonderful, friendly and very accommodating.

When we returned home, we have come to learn that for only a few dollars per night more, we could have stayed at Elbow Beach Resort. If you can afford those few dollars per night, do it. I know the next time we travel to Bermuda, we will.

Room Tip: Think about staying at Elbow Beach Resort if you can afford the few extra dollars per night.

“A Place I Would Definitely Return To In The Off Season”

My husband and I spent a wonderful week at this resort hotel over Christmas.Initially, we had a difficult time deciding between Elbow Beach and Coco. We are now sure that we chose the one for us. It is smaller, quieter, and feels more intimate. When we walked over to Elbow Beach, it looked cramped and not nearly as well maintained. Yes, it has more of a beach.

We appreciated the fact that the College(which sits directly behind this resort) was not in session due to the Xmas break. We have no idea what it might be like when the College is in session. The appeal of the off season for us is less humid, less crowded, and no cruise ships.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. It definitely pays to get bus tokens and day passes for both bus and ferry at the front desk.Getting around the island using buses and ferries was straight forward. The hotel offers free green fees to a number of golf courses, however, you must own or rent your own clubs.
We only had lunch once in the dining room and found the food and presentation to be excellent. We had a small fridge and microwave (which one can request) in our room. That allowed us to have some meals in our room or out on our balcony.
One definitely suffers from sticker shock when eating out or shopping at the local grocery.

Room Tip: Buildings 1 and 2 have the best location with beach views. We were on the 2nd floor of building 2 an...

“Excellent Value, Breathtaking views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

The Coco Reef Resort was a wonderful stay. It was my first time to Bermuda (with 3 friends) and we will surely come back to Bermuda and stay at Coco. The hotel itself is excellent, rooms are very "basic" with a floraly theme - but the views and location of the hotel is unbeatable. We were also afraid traveling in December might be too cold, but the weather was perfect (I'm from the DC area).
Staff very extremely friendly. We were upgraded upon arrival, front desk took care of all of our reservations and arranged the appropriate transportation. Even when it was raining while we were trying to check out- they sent a staff member with a golf cart to come pick us up (we didn't have an umbrella).

The hotel has a beach, but the recent weather has washed it away (so it's become quite rocky). about a 2 minute walk to elbow beach which has breathtaking views of the sunset,

Overall the Coco Reef made my trip. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to get the most value for their money.
