“Tired, but charming, in stunning location”

It is hard to review Galleon Beach as the cottages are in such dire need of upgrading. However, that said, they are functional and clean and have the basics of what you need for self catering. The location is wonderful, right on the beach and just a short boat ride (free during the day) to English Harbour. You can walk to Shirley Heights (there is a long way and a shorter way...), and you have a view of Montserrat. The beach is quiet and lovely, and it is shared with the Inn at English Harbour, which is at least three times the price. That said, when we booked a 1 bed cottage we paid $193, including taxes in high season. I would really not pay more.

The service, once there, is friendly and accomodating. Trying to pay over the phone before you get there is a bit complicated - make sure to call in the morning.

The restaurant Kasbah is lovely and mid priced (for Antigua), but only serves lunch and is closed on Mondays. However, you can of course wander over for food at the Inn...

“Service is zero”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2009

We had a good stay at galleon beach, just front of the beach. The bungalow was nice but old and the terrace is not well maintained. The beach is rocky and as we swim along the beach, we saw a long chair at the bottom of the sea. The price is too high for the confort. On sunday, I beach must be public and lots of people from Antigua came to relax on the beach and made picnics. The worst was the service. I thought that the woman at the reception made what was possible to destroy our holiday. I asked at noon for a mosquito net. It was not possible until yhe next day. I asked for candles. She went away and said after that the hotel don't provide candles. The safe is not free. I asked if its possible to keep the room a couple of hours because we had the flight in the evening and the hotel was quite empty. I saw that she thought how she can not accept but as had a agreement from an other lady the day before, she coudn't refuse.
However, we think positive and we had a good stay. The good thing is that you can relax on the private terrace having breakfast or a drink in the evening.

“Skip the Hotel, go for the Villas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2007

When we visited Antigua (Aug 3 - 12, 2007), Galleon Beach Hotel was shut down, and we were told, possibly for good. The restaurant, Calabash, was working to open by Aug 14.

The hotel manages several of the villas on the hillside behind the hotel. We stayed at Lime Hill Villa. I cannot say enough good things about this experience.

The Villa is a gorgeous 4 bedroom home with an infinity pool. The cleaning gal came daily (except Sunday). She continuously added fresh flowers to vases all over the house. It was very private and the views are PRICELESS. We could have stayed forever.

All bedrooms were air conditioned. The main living space had doors that opened up the entire wall in the front and back, allowing the breeze to flow through. The master bedroom has an outdoor shower as well. We stayed a week here and will definitely go back.

We give this 5 stars across the board! Worth every single penny of our hard earned (and very long saved) money!

You can see details and how to book at [--]or you can contact Galleon Beach Resort as I think they still man the office from 8am to 11am Eastern Time.

  • Liked — Privacy, View, absolute decadent feeling getting to stay there
  • Disliked — The steep drive is a bit to get used to, but please! It wouldn't stop me from staying!

“Very Comfortable”

Well painted, clean, large and airy. The cottages have basic furniture but comfortable. They also have a full kitchen. Prior to arriving, you can ask the hotel to go grocery shopping, which we did. This made it very convenient to have our breakfast in our cottage every morning. For dinner we went to the connected Calabash restaurant, which was very good.

The beach is very gentle and pretty. However, because it is hard to get around, a rental car is highly recommended.

This hotel is great for families.

“Relaxing holiday”

My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Antigua. We stayed for four nights in a two bedroom garden cottage (Mayflower) with my parents. The hotel accommodations were nice. The cottage was clean and bug free. It was nice to have our own kitchenette so that we could enjoy breakfast on our patio overlooking the bay. Our cottage was nestled up on a hill and faced south so we had a great view and even better we never got full sun. Our cottage was cool the entire time. The restaurant, Calabash, was good. The service was "caribbean," meaning that it was slow, but then so was every where else. There are some nice one to two mile hikes up to Shirley Heights just outside the entrance of the hotel. The hotel had a sunfish sailboat, sea kayaks, and snorkling gear to use free of charge, as well as beach chairs and towels. The staff was friendly and helpful when we needed to make a reservation for dinner or get a taxi. They even did some grocery shopping so that we had groceries when we arrived. There is a free water taxi that will run you over to Nelson's dockyard in just about five minutes. Overall it was a great stay, and I would stay at Galleon's again.
