We stayed in Villa 219F for a 10 day break. The views from the villa were lovely and the beach a short walk away was equally as beautiful. We are regulars to Barbados and have cruised the Caribbean, so we wanted to try somewhere else. The villa although well equipped and a great location is sadly looking it's age inside, as is the rest of the complex. The kitchen fridge and cooker did not work properly and bathrooms are functional but in our opinion need refurbishing, however, at £550 per week remains good value.
Our main criticism was the lack of restaurants on the complex and beyond. We had transport for the duration of our visit but still struggled to find any that were even open or offered a decent menu, including English Harbour and Dickinson Bay. We were told by the locals that May is the start of there closed season and a lot of places close down for months! This is obviously not a problem if you are in a hotel but, we found we had to cook far too many times than we wanted due to this.
The beach although beautiful has cloudy sea for some reason and other beaches waters on the island were clearer. Don't pay for sunbeds as they are free (blue/white sripped ones from Casterways) and we were able to get the beach brolly down to $5us a day instead of $10!
The Mozzies and sandflies were a big problem in such we could not eat outside at night. Someone in our party had 39 bites in the first 4 hours of arriving. We used the local 'OFF' but they still bit. Deet doesn't work here! We also used 'BOT' for the inside of the villa and sprayed every day.
The plus points against other Islands are that it is very beautiful, ideal honeymoon Island, and very quiet if that's what you are looking for( we are nearly 50 and too quiet for us). Alcohol and some food in the supermarket are cheaper than in Barbados.
The negatives are not enough places to eat for self-catering, especially in the closed season. (Barbados only closes down a bit in September)
If total peace is what you are after the Antigua is for you. If you want a choice of a secluded beach in the day (or busy, they have both!) and a good choice of restaurants in the evening then Barbados is for you.
