“Sandal's does it....again!”

February 9, 2012

I'll begin by stating that this was our 10th visit to a Sanda's Resort. Admittedly, we are partial,
however we also recognize that readers of these reviews are using the information do determine the best value for their money. To further qualify, my wife & I are retired and are on a fixed income. Therefore we are very aware of "cost". Having said that, the experience we have enjoyed at the Sandal's Resorts we have visited have been wonderful! The cost is a bit more but "Oh my!" what a wonderful way to spend your money.

Note: This was our first visit to Antigua.
The Antigua property is simply beautiful! Large. Intimate. Incredible, service oriented staff. The suites in the Mediterrian Village were wonderful. Huge rooms offering magnificent views.
It was my 66th birthday so we treated ourselves to having a butler. Sheldon & N'Kosi couldn't do enough for us. (I bring my own fishing gear so that I can fish from the beach. Sheldon went out of his way to bring me enough squid that I was able to use during our entire stay. N'kosi made certain that my wife had a reserved place on the beach and a cooler of whatever she wanted by her lounge chair). We were also provided the alcoholic beverages of our choice in our room (Crown Royal & Tanquery Gin). Late afternoons found a plate of fresh fruits & cheese next to the bottle of wine chilling in the wine bucket.

As part of my birthday gift, my wife purchased a Sport Fishing trip for me. Esther, in the Tours & Excursions facility, did a wonderful job in making all of the necessary arrangements.
As we were returing guest's, Karen in the Soon Come Back area, made certain that ALL of her guests were well cared for.

The restaurants were all wonderful. Our only disappointment was the Sushi Bar. It was good however, we have an excellent sushi restaurant at home which we visit weekly. Perhaps our palets are jaded. Again, the offerings were good. Mario's Italian & Eleanor's were killer!! While you have the option of purchasing a different selection of wines, the Berringer house wines are fine.

As our next visit to a Sandal's Resort is "complimentary" (check out the Sandal's Select Program) the St. Lucia Grande & The Whitehouse in Jamaica now have some serious competition.

I certainly hope that this review helps you in your decision making process. Regardless of which property you choose you will not be disappointed in having chosen Sandal's.

“Better than Best Customer Service!”

My Husband and I decided to go to Sandals Grande Antigua after being consistently told by my parents that Sandals was great. So we ended up going on our Honeymoon in August. I know this is a little late of a review but I had to write it. When arriving at the resort we were met by our Butler who had cold towels waiting for us. He took us straight to our room which was the Bougainvillea Suite with butler service and it was beautiful. He immediately went out to get us a cold drink and jerk chicken as we decided to walk around the room. We began to notice that there were mosquitoes flying around and also the bathroom didn't seem cleaned. We used our cell phone that was provided by the resort to call our butler Maureen who was on at the time said that she would take care of the problem for us. She then came and met us at dinner after about 20 minutes and informed us that they would be moving us to the Penthouse sweet which overwhelming to say the least. The butlers moved our luggage from one side of the hotel to the other. The room that they moved us to was amazing!!!! That was just the first night. The rest of the stay was magnificent from our butler N'kosi and Jerod (I think that was Jerod's name) bringing us breakfast in bead everyday, to the great restaurants, snorkeling, spa services, magnificent pool, to the mm mm good Mai Tai's at the Japanese Restaurant. We loved every part of it. We look forward to spending many anniversaries at Sandals. Thank you everyone at Sandals Grande Antigua for making our honeymoon a trip we will never forget.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have magnificent views!

“Fantastic Honeymoon”

My wife and I just recently returned from Sandals Grande Antigua and I can honestly say we wish we had never left. We stayed on the Caribbean side of the resort in a Honeymoon Rondoval with plunge pool. Its a cozier atmosphere when compared to the Med side which we appreciated. The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained.
Reading some of the reviews beforehand had me a bit nervous about how our experience was going to be. Completely wrong. We loved it there. Cats? Only saw a few and they're very friendly. Bugs? We didn't have a problem at all. Employees always had a huge smile and were always eager to help. Service was fast and friendly.
Honestly, the only complaint I would have would be about a few of the guests that stay there. Dumping trash and dinnerware everywhere, expecting someone to be right behind them to clean up their mess. Don't even get me started about the chair freaks. Having butler level service was a great help dealing with them, though we felt more comfortable spending our days in our private pool rather than anger deal with the chair cliques. Its the disrespect that some of the guests show towards staff and patrons that was the only smudge on an otherwise beautiful experience.
The best thing about our week was the fantastic efforts of Wendel and Cecil, our butler duo. They are absolutely wonderful and made our honeymoon week better than we could have imagined. We'll go back if we can have those two helping us out again.

Room Tip: Butler-level is worth it. Wendel and Cecil are fabulous.

A very nice property that is quite beautiful & well maintained. The restaurants are good but three are (except the Barefoot & Marios) situated within 50 feet of each other. The evening music in the courtyard divides the restuarants so eating earlier is quieter. There is also evening music in the courtyard outside of Marios. The staff are wonderful and are great ambassadors for Sandals. It is a large property & walking is required. The rooms are very nice but there were reports of sand fleas biting a lot of guests when sitting on their balconies. Our friends were bitten a lot but we weren't as I guess our meat is less tender. They do an evening bug fogging of the property so at 5;45pm we always closed our doors while the smoke disipated. You can walk on the beach left or right for a fair distance. To the far right are a few other resorts with vendors & "flea market" style booths on the beach. We weren't bothered too much by cigarette smoking but it is there only outside. We went on the Segway tour & had a blast. It was so much fun but be prepared for the day after effects ... sore feet & calf muscles. The only 3 items that caused us concern was the SSG dinner, the saving of beach chairs & the airport. The dinner was held indoors in a confined convention room & the noise & heat was so unbearable that is was impossible to have a conversation with anyone. We were told that people were getting up at 5am to reserve chairs & that many loud verbal excahnges occurred. The culture of this resort has to change & we heard the day we left that they had started a new policy that if a reserved chair had not been occupied by 10am the towels, etc would be removed. I don't know who is going to remove the towels as there was no visible supervision around the pool area. On a daily basis the concrete decking around the pool & hot tube were full of empty glass bottles, champagne flutes, beer bottles despite the no glass in pool signs? I myself one day was verbally attacked for removing a hat from a lounge & abducting the culprit. I had not even been to the pool area before on that day so how could I have done this grievous act. I was told that I must be a Canadian ... you figure it out. Why can't folks get along & enjoy the sun together. The airport is crazy. Our flight had to line up on the roadway to queue through the Antiguan customs on boarding. They hand searched each & every suitcase & it took forever. To me this place is just another island, a nice one & Sandals does do a great job. We might go back but not until we see what else is out there. We're sure there is a little gem somewhere.

Room Tip: Cypress tower was excellent but we heard of mosquitos & other bugs in some of the 2 story buildi...

December 2011 my husband and I stayed in a rondoval with private plunge pool and butler service - the property is beautiful and the room was great! Don't bother with the butler service unless you wish to be tied to a cell phone (which didn't work). They set up the butlers to fail - the place is too large for individual treatment - at least by the way they have it set-up. Mario's Restaurant was very good. The OK Coral was just that O.K. Eleanor's is bad! cats in the restaurant, over booked, right off the noisy lobby open air restaurant - certainly not a "white glove" restaurant. On our day of leaving we had to bring our own luggage to the front - Butler Service was nowhere to be seen or heard from!!!! At midnight on more than 1 occasion they rolled either luggage or the room service cart up and down the cobble stone pathways - nice way to wake-up in the middle of the night - can't figure to out to carry things by hand - lazy and uncaring! This is just another all-inclusive hotel trying to best of the worst. Go eat at Papa Zouk - it is worth paying for a great time and great food!
