“Indoor Camping”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

Well... first of all, let me say that we had a fabulous time in Anguilla. What a wonderful island with wonderful people. (Photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/adamhonig/sets/72157624517043011/)

And let me also say that our time at Sur La Plage wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't the a good value for what we spent and the owner clearly isn't interested in her guests.

Our villa, the "owner's villa" was a two bedroom, two bath house. There were numerous, obvious issues with the house that became apparent when we arrived:

- The air conditioning in the main room simply did not blow cold air. Since it was about 90 degrees, this was a concern. It took three days for the freon to be replaced.

- The jacuzzi tub featured prominently on their website was over-run with ants. I'm not talking about one or two, I'm talking about fifty or so. And though it was dutifully cleaned each day by Iris the housekeeper, they returned within hours. It was unusable.

- Both bathrooms were like mini saunas. non ventilated and very stuffy. one of their bathrooms was right out of the Brady Bunch (dark brown on light brown themed), the other ridden with ants....great

- The kids' room had no shades on the windows, which seemed to face east. So they were woken with the sun each morning at 5:50am. We eventually covered the windows with black plastic garbage bags, then with cardboard, then with a heavy blanket which eventually helped.

- The living room features a wicker love seat with a very old cushion which can barely hold two people, and certainly not comfortably. The other seating is two matching wicker "wing chairs".

- The screens in the house had enough holes that by the end of the trip, us and our kids were covered with mosquito bites. Half of the the window cranks (that crank the windows closed) were broken and so the windows didn't fully close, which was a boon to the mosquitos. Plus since they were broken, they shed parts enabling my two year old to present his 5 month old sister with a good sized screw.

- The mattress in the master bedroom was obviously purchased in 1978. Its springs were extremely uncomfortable. After a few days of sore backs, we mentioned this to Iris and she said "many guests complain about this" and she produced a foam

- Smaller things included the fact that it took 45 minutes to bring a pot of water to a boil on the stove, the air conditioning once we got it working blew directly at the only couch in the living room, the driveway to the house had so many potholes on it that we scraped the bumper and bottom of the car numerous times on each trip, the "beautiful walkway" to the beach requires one to run a gauntlet of sand flies, the beach chairs on Mead's Bay are surrounded by small thorny cacti which seem to be growing in the sand, and only one deck chair had a usable cushion.

In short, the house is just not being taken good care of. It is frustrating to spend four or five days of your vacation chasing down the owner, dealing with the house keeper to get the house in good working condition. And don't get fooled into thinking that it was just this villa -- our friends stayed next door and had the same issues. Though there were some good things there (see below), I strongly advise someone looking for a villa rental in Anguilla to look elsewhere.

Iris, the housekeeper, seemed to try hard to address these issues but her approach often wasn't suitable. In response to the air conditioning not working, she suggested that we simply allow the non-existant breeze to cool the house.

Iris was a help, but sometimes too much as she would wash clothes we didn't ask her to wash and they wouldn't be available for us the next day. Like my bathing suit, which disappeared for two days, and our son's favorite pajamas that he loves sleeping in.

The good things about the villa include:

- The outdoor shower was the best thing going for them. probably the best thing about the villa. it was private and encompassed with gorgeous flowers with a view of the very plush back yard.

- Free wifi, once I showed Iris how to turn on the cable modem

- My wife was very pleased with the nice body wash that they provided in the one usable shower

- Mead's Bay is beautiful and had great places that are a short walk like the Frangipani beach club.

- They have an arrangement with the hotel across the street, La Sirena, to use their pool, which was OK.

- The villa was on the wonderful island of Anguilla :) and we drove to many nice places like Cap Juluca, Shoal Bay, etc., very easily.

Dear Mr. Honig,

We appreciate you letting us know about your experiences and giving us an opportunity to upgrade the items you mentioned. While Anguilla is an excellent, safe place to stay, sometimes the services (like freon supply and general maintenance) are slower to be completed than we would like. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you'll consider coming back to stay with us in the future.

Your experience was unfortunate, but not common, and we have many guests who choose us as their favorite villa time and time again. We offer direct access to one of the most gorgeous beaches on the island, with an entire furnished villa, capable maid service and many amenities handy for our treasured guests. Villas down-beach cost typically two or three times as much, and don't always offer as much privacy and comfort as we do on our two acre estate.

Kindest regards,
Sur La Plage Management Team

“SurLaPlage Villa Wonderfull!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

This villa has the greatest location! The gorgeous turquoise waters and white sand of Meads Bay are a minute walk from the backyard . The surroundings are private and serene. Truly everything was there for us including beach towels. My getaway was a girls reunion of sorts. We were welcomed by the owner, Madeline, a very personable and helpful woman. We stayed in the villa that had three bedrooms (two with ocean views) a separate apartment downstairs, a roomy kitchen, dinning and living . All rooms were decorated with care and clean. There is a wrap around porch in the back of the villa that shows the ocean view, great for relaxing. We had a great housekeeper, Iris, who did the cleaning and made sure that we had fresh towels daily. She was both friendly and knowledgeable concerning Anguilla. We ate in at the villa two evenings, then we were off to explore the many culinary delights in Anguilla. A short walk on the beach will take you to a good restaurant for breakfast etc. Car rental is a must if you plan to travel on the island. I loved my time spent here. SurlaPlage is a Paradise found!

Love Sur la Plage! Been there 5 times in the last 3 years. It is so unpretentious and is situated on the most beautiful beach. Very private and villas have everyting needed for a great vacation. A car is a must to explore and get to the great, great restaurants. (Don't forget to stay to left when driving) The villas are wonderful, very clean and well taken care of by the maid, Iris. She's super...very helpful and accomodating. Can't wait to get back... this is now a yearly thing for me. It feels like a home away from home.

“Amazing Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2008

This was an amazing vacation... just what the doctor ordered.... I was recovering from major surgery and this was healing, beautiful and everything that I expected and hoped for. the beach is a fantastic expanse of pure white sand, turquoise water and best of all... mostly deserted. It was amazing to lay on a chaise and listen to the water lap the shore and not hear another human voice. The Villa was charming, immaculate and had anything and everything yo could ask for and if you needed something, all you needed to do was ask Iris, the maid and she would get it for you... How pampered... she even changed the sheets every other day and washed, then hung them in the sun to dry... what a delicious bit of old fashioned luxury....she even got in her car and made us follow her to the ferry so we would not miss the boat. ( we were going shopping in St Marten for the day )
One of the highlites of our stay was to order dinner from the onsite Chef who came in and cooked for us.... an outstanding meal....Cornish hens, stuffed with wild rice... an awesome fruit sauce, asparagus and bananas foster for desert...OOPS forgot to mention the cheese , pate and caviar tray with wine before dinner. Cannot wait to go back.

“BEWARE -Bring Lots Of Water”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2008

We had a bad experience
We arrived as scheduled. The place was a wreck. After a struggle to find a local contact, the maid soon arrived . Yes Iris is terrific. Iris blamed the lady who books the villas. We waited 4 hours with our moms( 74 and 66 yrs ) for the villa to be cleaned.
Next the owner "M" arrives with 2 dogs and 2 personal guests. M has Iris begin washing their laundry from our villa. This laundry is hung to dry in our so called private area. The dogs bark through the night along with cats fighting under the windows. With no screens we had to keep the windows and doors closed to keep the cats out. The animals mess was scattered all over the lawn.
Next day Iris continues to do their laundry from our villa. We hear M scream at Iris as if she were a slave or something. I had to ask her to stop once. That night after dark Iris finally finishes and leaves. After we shower we now decide we can take a private moment . We sit in towels on the veranda . Suddenly unannounced M drives around the back of our villa . The headlights shone bright on us . We retreat to our room.M drops off 2 more friends beneath us. We hear them running water for a while and cleaning up down stairs. Then I go to brush my teeth before i try to sleep. It seemed we had no water . I wasnt sure. I thought maybe somebody turned a valve or something . We try to sleep.
In the morning 5am ( now my husbands birthday) we wake to use the bathroom. We had no water. We take a torch to find the pump room . Finding the pump running hot and dry we turn it off before it burns up. Saving the owner from buying a new one. We wake M at 530 am to tell her of the situation. She tells us Iris is to blame and Iris will be here in 1 hour . We ask what to do for our moms when they wake .M tells us to bring them over to use her bath .We go back at 8am they wont answere the door. Iris arrives about 830 am THEN water is orderd. We are subject to take our moms to a public toilet. SOME water is delivered a few hours later. Iris blames M.
Things continue just the same. Two days later we are without water again. We go to M again to tell her. Her friends decide to interfere . They tell us "your whining "she said it twice . then she says "too bad life is tough" M excuses her saying "shes a doctor".As we leave we hear the woman say to M "she probably lef the water to run out on purpose" How ridiculous!
This is just half the story.
When I get home I write a respectful letter to M explaning how we deeply regret the mistreatment we endured.I asked for compensation for two days and nights without basic necessities. ( i really just wanted a sincere letter of apology directly from M) She doesnt answere.A week later I finally call to ask her to read my letter . She started to yell. I told her I didnt call to upset her . I just wanted her to read my letter. She offered shallow apologies . She just wanted to get me off the phone. She complained of a headache since this happened. I told her I hoped she felt better soon. A couple days later her neice (the lady who handles the booking ) sent me an e-mail that stated she was sorry for the problems that occured but M does not have a refund policy. That was it . NO compensation. Our holiday was a ruined . They did offer a 10% discount should we want to give them another try. HUMMMM
Now we know why soo many pages were missing from the guest book.
Watch out ! She will keep your money . Dont expect the goods and services you pay for .
Thats That,
Sincerely ,D Clementz NJ USA
