“Wish we could rate The Ku Hote "-5 stars"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Our stay at the Ku hotel from 11/27-12/1/2011 was pretty bad. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. My husband and I do not get to vacation often, I really wish we could have spent our money elsewhere. When we booked the Ku hotel it was required we pay for it entirely up front, so unfortunately once we got there we pretty much couldn't leave. We had visited the Ku on a day trip to Anguilla in 2008 while staying in St. Martin--at that time we were so impressed with the lovely grounds and sweet staff that I thought it would be no problem to pay the entire amount up front. I was wrong and my advice to you is: Don't do it! Don't stay at the KU! I read some mixed reviews on travel zoo and still went ahead and did it, and how I wish I hadn't!

Spend the extra money on a nicer, newer hotel. The Ku stank, literally! The hotel accommodations were extremely run down, dirty bathrooms and smelly bedding, no screens on the windows, roof leaked and there was a bat living in the ceiling that woke us up every night, it was pretty awful. Read the other negative reviews and trust them! The food at the "restaurant" was less than mediocre, service was the same and ambiance was more like eating at a park bench--which honestly I would prefer that because it wouldn't cost as much and would taste better if I made it! I wrote a complaint to the general manager after my vacation disaster was finally over only to get a response telling me that all of my experiences were not true. We are not super wealthy and not fancy fancy...The Ku is less than shabby.

Anguilla however, is beautiful and has the most beautiful beaches! I would rather camp on them however than ever return to the Ku.

Room Tip: just don't go

“Wonderful beach, hotel is seriously lacking”

My wife and I have only stayed at Cuisinart and love that side of the island. We decided to give Ku a try and use it as a base for checking out many of the beaches on this side of the island-and of course take advantage of Shoal Bay East. With low expectations we were disappointed with the property. The one thing going for it was the proximity to good beach bars and restaurants but otherwise it is not a place we'd go back to. The beach bar at the hotel did have low prices for drinks and was conveniently located. For food the restaurant had terrible service and mediocre food. We were pleased that Madeariman was so close because they had good food and great service at both lunch and multiple dinner seatings. As you can tell the resort was a disappointment so we spent time looking elsewhere to spend our days.

It is worth noting that while we were at Ku the island experienced heavy rain fall over the course of three days and our room was leaking in a half dozen places and did not have any help sent to check on damage. My review does not take this into account though the response, or lack thereof, from management was something worth taking into consideration.

Room Tip: In the event of rain, the roof leaked in our room in many places. It could've just been our roo...

“Wonderful-Again !”

Stayed at KU November 12th -19th and had a wonderful time. Our second visit and will be returning again next year. Service was very good, very polite and accomodating and the view from the balcony surely one of the best in the world. Grocery store not open but no problem since Best Buy store is only a 10 minute drive from the Hotel.
Discovered a wonderful new restaurant called "On Da Rocks" give it a try !

“what a sad event to see the radical decline of this property!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

my wife and i have stayed at ku for several years, and have always enjoyed the quirky nature of the property. the beach is the best we have ever seen. the hotel in the past always had issues of some sort, but it nonetheless was charming.

that has all changed.

we were at the hotel in november 2011. the convenience shop and the zaza boutique had closed. the fountain was turned off. the evening lanterns had been removed. it felt like the hotel had died.

when we went to the beautiful beach the first morning, we were immediately hustled by a local who wanted to sell us space on the beach chairs. he was hanging out with the ku bartender, who encouraged the scam.

the ku bartender then went to sleep ON TOP OF THE BAR for two hours. when i complained i was told the bartender was the son of Lorraine (who runs the restaurant) and therefore it is ok.

when we complained to the front desk, we were told that the hotel had recently reopened (after the annual october closing) and that service should improve soon. they didn't care in any way.

this wonderful boutique property from 5 years ago is now a dirty, non working, uncaring, dead property with an end clearly in sight.

STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!

“Ku again but this time may be my last....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Had a review of this hotel back in 2009. It was just passable back then given the issues, but decided to give the hotel another try figuring management would heed the reviews from the people staying there.... i guess not...:-(

Look this review is going to be as honest as it going to get. I not going to suger coat it or anything so here goes. Honestly, I would rate this is the 2.5 to 3 star range out of 5. If you are looking for a hotel to be pampered in or world class amenties (i.e. going on your one and only honeymoon, etc), THIS IS NOT THE HOTEL FOR IT. It will however meet your criteria if you are looking for a basic place to stay. Keep in mind that the hotel is a little beat up. From my conversations with the staff, the locals, and the assistant manager, the current owner is pretty much out of money to make improvements and is looking for an investor right now to pony up money for future capital investment into the hotel. Until that happens, the instrastructure conditions will pretty much remain the same as others has represent it on their reviews of Ku. I not going to comment on this anymore.

My reason for staying here is simple: It is situated on one of the best beaches if not the best beach in Anguilla. I done some extensive travels in my life, especially for my desire for nice beaches and Shoal Bay East is easily up there with the best. If it wasn't the location frankly, I would rather stay at a place like Frangapani or if I really want to live large, surge on Viceroy or Cap Juluca.

Here is some issues we encountered with our stay this go around:

1) No hot water first night we were there- the staff was nice to move us to another wing (make sure you stay in the west beach wing. The right beach wing blows totally since both times I stayed there and had issues)

2) TV remote not working - again, we had this same issue last time but seriously how much TV are you going to watch if your beaching and vacationing in Anguilla??

3) Stove and pilot light for the cooktop wasn't working (My wife was pretty good on fixing the cooktop issue with using matches) and we figure we weren't going to bake anything in the kitchen anyways.

4) Towel rack nearest the shower stall was loose and the towel holder would come out if you apply some pressure.. well we said screw it since we can always move the towels on the other rack in the bathroom

5) There was a mildewly smell from the bathroom, we had to open the windows for it bit but the smell would come on and off the entire week we stay there.

6) The A/C was week in the initial room we were assigned to (again, i gonna say... stay the hell away from the right wing beach front.. been having issues with those units during this stay and when I stay there back in 2009). After we were moved to the left wing beach front, the A/Cs in our unit was working fine.

7) The bedroom door hinge wasn't working properly so needed a rock to hold in place to prevent the door from slamming.. again.. you're on vacation and you will be on the beach most of the time anyways so is this really important to you ... LOL

Also in keep in mind there is another hotel right next to Ku called Shoal Bay Villas. It is another alternative if you want to stay in the Shoal Bay East beach if you don't want to stay at Ku. Obivously, unlike Ku, these guys got their act together since they are now expanding another wing under construction right now and I met the owners who seem to be very nice. I may give them a try next time I come back to Anguilla.

Again, I would like to wrap up the reviews as follows: the Service at Ku is not bad for the price you pay (Anguilla is one expensive island as many people will tell you) the staff does try very hard to do whatever is in their power to get things done so kudos to them on that. As long as you are willing to tolerate the maintainence issues that you read from other reviewers, you will be fine.

Room Tip: DO NOT GET THE WING NEXT TO THE LOCAL BEACH RESTAURANTS (uncle Earnies)...... They have serious wate...
