I set out on this trip with my usual anticipation coupled with fear of the unknown. We had never stayed on Mead’s Bay, and did not know what to expect. After reading winter reports of huge waves I became even more nervous. My fears were unfounded.
We arrived at 10:30 at night and could hear but not see the ocean, the next morning at sunup, I was out there to look and my heart was doing a happy dance. Days were spent floating in that calm bay - until the storm hit, and you can read about that in another post:

Nathan’s Cove is located between Bananas by the Sea and Blanchard’s on Mead’s Bay. It is a two story duplex, with the top floor being a four bedroom apartment - each top floor room has two beds and its own bathroom. Bottom floor units have two bedrooms, with one double bed in one, and two double beds in the other. The pictures do not do it justice - the curtains are beige, not red, and the furniture is high quality heavy rattan. http://www.nathanscove.com/
(The prices on the website are out of date, and they do not take credit cards - if you want to reserve call Earle Gumbs).
Each ground floor unit has two bedrooms, a large (24’ x 12’) living room, tv/vcr, phone, full size kitchen with all accoutrements, a washer and dryer, and a huge porch with a table and 4 chairs and loungers. Note - no hairdryer and NO ALARM CLOCK!! The place is totally sound proof, we never heard our neighbors, even though they were full. We loved everything about it and can hardly wait to return.
We arrived by taxi at 10:30 at night and Ronnie Bryan promised to have our car to us the early next morning. He was there at 8:30am with the car and we were off to go shopping at Lakes in the Valley. We loved Ronnie Bryan and will use him again, his prices and service are the best.
Bananas by the Sea for dinner Thursday night. This is an old favorite of ours. Their staff is excellent and Bob and Dale the owners are great people. Pete had Mahi Mahi stuffed with crab and shrimp, it has a mouthwatering creamy bisque type sauce; and I had crayfish - cooked perfectly - this is only the second time I have had it, and last time (not here) it seemed mushy, but this time it was firm and sweet. Their ambiance is one of the nicest on the island, a beautifully decorated room, one of our favorites.
Friday night Roy’s - after happy hour. We went to Roy’s our first year during happy hour, and it was a zoo, now we go AFTER happy hour, pay the higher prices and enjoy the fresh food. We shared the lobster and avocado salad, this is a heavenly creation, lettuce with big chunks of lobster and avocado and a creamy type of horseradish/mayo/Tabasco dressing, really really good. Along with that we had Mahi Mahi, which is seasoned with a lemon pepper, and was moist and delicious, and Snapper grilled in garlic butter - two wonderful pieces of fish, and we shared a key lime pie. Roy’s is one of our favorites too, we like the relaxed atmosphere and their food is always predictable and good.
Sat night - Luna Rosa. A new find for us and we liked it a lot. They have redone the interior of the old Bistro Phil’s and it is quite stunning, very modern. We were early as I was not quite sure how to get there, but they were gracious and showed us to our table. An outstanding view out over the ocean and the remnants of the sunset were in the distance. This would be an excellent spot for lunch as well, with that great view. I had emailed them for my reservation and Sylvestro got back to me right away. They served a sweet tomato bruchetta as a lagniappe and it was delicious. Pete had the Veal Milanese, very light and delicious, not greasy at all and I had the Dover Sole - I know it is not a local fish but I like it and can’t get it just anywhere. It was served whole, and Sylvestro expertly deboned it at the table, it was really good. We also shared the chocolate molten lava cake which was mouthwatering.
Deon’s Overlook - Sunday Brunch - I just can’t say enough about Deon’s, it always leaves me with a warm feeling, everything is so perfect, the food, service and setting is one of our favorites.
We’ve had breakfast and lunch there and even dinner one year, and it is all good. I had an omelet and Pete had the French toast - and we each had a bloody mary - theirs are really great - spicy with coarse ground pepper. Emily was downstairs, but Deon came out to say hi, he said he would be leaving for up north after memorial day weekend. One of my “never miss” places.
Sun night - E’s oven - I had faxed in a reservation and then called as soon as we arrived to make sure they had it, and they confirmed. They too served an amuse bouche which was small chunks of Mahi Mahi in a mango salsa. Vernon Hughes has been featured on Great Chefs of the Caribbean, and I think he is highly underrated. His cooking is very creative and delicious. I, of course wanted to try something different, but could not resist the pumpkin soup and the chicken - I just love that chicken, it is so moist and good and his pumpkin soup is just a bit gingery, it is one of my favorites. Pete had the day’s special - Mahi Mahi in a creole sauce and it appeared as if he was going to lick the plate. They have a very good inexpensive wine list. Another keeper on my list, consistent and good with nice soft jazz playing in the background. Go.
Monday lunch - Barrel Stay - we missed this place last year and it is such an ideal setting for lunch. It is wonderful to sit out on the patio and watch the activity at Sandy Ground over a leisurely lunch. We had burgers and Jill turned up her nose at our choice and then laughed. Love it there…highly recommend.
Veya - Monday night - I could hardly wait to return to Veya. Their décor is stunning, Jerry is the consummate host, and one of their staff “Amalee” is just the sweetest person on the earth. Their lagniappe was a Mahi Mahi cevice in coconut milk, it had a lot of cilantro. I see why everyone has been raving about the Moroccan shrimp cigars, they are really good, shrimp rolled into a puff pastry - spicy, with a fruity sauce. I had the special of the day which was Mahi Mahi, a delicious salad with pine nuts and goat cheese. Pete had the layered salad, which had corn, shrimp black beans and cilantro. He also had the Snapper which had cilantro. Not our favorite this year as we HATE cilantro.
Wed lunch - Back down to Ferry Boat Inn again. We had our usual cheeseburgers and rum punch and both were delicious as usual. We ran into Christian in the parking lot - great to see him again too. Still number one for burgers, although Barrel is a close second.
Wed evening, I was wanting to go to Frangi, because Dumpa was playing, but when I called they said that is their West Indian Buffet night. Buffet? Yikes, I go to Anguilla to get away from buffets. So, we went to Mahi Mahi at Serena. This was a great little find. Very good pumpkin soup, excellent conch fritters - really good with a green salad, and Pete had the pork tenderloin served with mashed sweet potatoes - he loved it. The service throughout was excellent, and it has a low key, quiet ambiance. We really liked it.
Thursday, the ocean was still crazy, but we were able to sit out in our chairs for the morning and the sun was bright, and it is just mesmerizing to sit there and watch those waves. For lunch we headed down to Koko’s, but they were closed. What a neat little spot though and a really great view of the ocean - the water looked like someone had dumped a bottle of blue food coloring in it - the color was unreal, and the waves hitting the reef were tremendous. And, they have a whole field of Turk’s head cactus, which sent me in to orbit, as I collect cactus and have one at home. We went to Hibernia, but their porch was full and we would have to wait for a seat and I am not into waiting, so we left and went to
Cote de Mer. http://www.cotemer-anguilla.com/
My new favorite place for lunch - it was really good. We both had salads, mine was warm goat cheese on petite toasts served over greens with walnuts, Pete’s was similar but his had blue cheese and bacon - more like a thick ham - this was mouthwatering food, and the setting is so pretty. The blinds were down due to the weather, I am sure it is even more stunning when the weather is nice. Highly, highly recommend - a drive from the West, but worth it. Go!
Thursday Evening - Mangos, we hadn’t been to Mangos in a few years, simply because there were too many other places to try. The blinds were down and the water was coming right up into the first row of the restaurant. I had the conch chowder - one of the best things I have ever tasted, thick creamy and sweet with lots of conch, potatoes and corn and the lobster cakes. We shared a Caesar salad - unbelievable - crisp and fresh with an out of the world dressing and whole anchovies on top. We both proclaimed this to be the best we have ever had, anywhere, even Tijuana the birthplace of the Caesar, this was outstanding. Pete had the triggerfish and we shared the crème brulee. Everything, was really good, service was excellent throughout. A keeper.
Friday lunch - Meads Bay Grill at Frangi - another great new place for us. The setting out on the patio was ideal, very nice. I had the fish sandwich which was just perfect and Pete had - what else - a burger! Their beach was coming back and they had some loungers out. Many people with kids in their pool, we saw more kids on this trip than we have ever seen - I guess due to Spring Break.
Friday Dinner - For our last night I chose Caprice and was not disappointed. http://www.capriceanguilla.com/index.html
It was truly an excellent experience. Abi (Abraham) and Marco made us feel right at home. We had the Caesars and Buffalo mozzarella salads - both were very good, the Caesars at Mangos was just a teeny bit better, but this was very good. But, the highlight was our dinners. The pasta is made fresh daily, (and the gnocchi is made each day at 5:00pm), this was fabulous. I had the lobster tortelli, - pasta stuffed with lobster with an unbelievably good lobster sauce, and Pete was adventurous and tried the chocolate tortelli which is a chocolate pasta (sounds strange but it was delicious) stuffed with sausage and mushrooms in a creamy parmesan sauce, very different. I thought for sure he would turn up his nose as he is a meat and potatoes guy, but he loved it.
Once again we were stuffed and here comes Abi with a drink cart - we told him “no more” we are stuffed, plus we had to get home to pack for our 7:45am flight the next morning. My number one dinner spot this year, exceptional.
