“Loved it! Clean, Comfortable, Nicely Furnished. Will Return”
I wanted a place that my husband and I could stay for a few days to celebrate his birthday. I almost missed this jewel. I found an ad for Ocean Gate Resort in a AAA tourbook and my inquiry was my last in Boothbay Harbor before moving on to another town in Maine. I was impressed with the website and could see from the pictures it might be a nice place and it had only two king rooms left. I did my Tripadvisor and websearch homework and decided to take a chance.
We arrived late afternoon in the rain. (I too recommend you arrive during daylight. Your perception will be different than at night.) As we entered the road I could tell this was going to be a tranquil location. Lots of trees with a gravel road encouraging you to slow down and start to enjoy. We arrived at the office, was greeted by one of the co-owners and from the decor I again had very good feelings. Our room was a king bed in the Cedar building, rm 243. I could tell when we opened the door I didn't have to worry any longer. The room was lovely. Recently upgraded with pillowtop bed (you didn't want to leave the bed!), Thomasville furnishings, new bathroom, wet bar, refrig, large flat screen tv, coffee pot. The color tone was soothing cedar. aaaahhhhh Every room has a waterfront view. Ours was a great view of the harbor - even in the rain. My kind of "camping".
Yes, there is a buffet breakfast included (the other writer must have stayed somewhere else to say there was no breakfast). Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, breads, danish, eggs, fruit, juice, one morning corned beef hash, hash browns,( one morning bacon), oatmeal, cereal, waffles. Another of the co-owners greeted us and even suggested a table by the window to view the harbor. In the summer I am sure the outdoor covered pavilion is used for breakfast also.
Weather permitting there are kayaks available, a gazebo to sit and watch the waterfront, ping pong area, miniature golf, heated pool and hot tub, among other amenities.
Staying in Boothbay Harbor certainly is where all the shops are, but, staying at Ocean Gate Resort on Southport Island is the tranquility you come to Maine for. Less than 10 minutes away from downtown. We definitely plan to go back next year.
I travel a lot and plan events. This facility has been well thought out and very comfortable. Our stay was the first week in October for three days and the resort was peaceful with other couples. I think during the height of the season it may be a bit noisier with lots of families.
Loved it.
Negative: If the room had a small microwave it would be complete.
Room Tip: Cedar Rooms are slightly higher elevation up, nice view of the harbor. I would recommend second floo...
