“Handy location, ok hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

We stayed here for one night when we needed to book something at short notice, i.e 2pm on the Saturday afternoon for that night and of the available hotels this was the most reasonable. The hotel itself is nice, it has a restaurant (we didn't use) and rooms that are scattered from what we could see between different buildings, there is a small bar and next door a much newer brasserie type place owned by the hotel which is very different in character. My personal view of the hotel is that it will probably need some revamping in the near future and I wasn't quite sure what it was trying to be. The room itself (In the main building), was fine, clean, it was a bit musty and had all the things you would expect, but not in a grand way you might get in some of slightly more expensive boutique hotels that are now available in the area. We slept ok and it was quiet and handy for the high street ( we ate over the road in a lovely little restaurant - can't remember the name, but it is almost opposite)

Breakfast was next door in the Brasserie, which was good.

In short although a pleasant stay, it was very average as a place and we would probably not stay again if other places were available.

“Charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2010

Stayed in a charming four poster room directly over the restaurant so it was not too noisy. The room and the bed sloped and creaked and reminded you of what a 15th C building was really like. The original and unique wall decorations had been left in situ. Sometimes difficult to find anyone on reception (morning and evening) but overall would recommend this and would certainly stay again.

“Aweful and overpriced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2009

Room was tatty and not properly cleaned, very dated room (not in a good way) and noisy due to the bar directly below, very expensive for what you get.

The Hilton at Basingstoke is actually better and cheaper than this place. The Audleys Wood Hotel for a little bit more money is superior in every way.

The rest of the hotel is nice with period features.

The owner should not be customer facing, he has the customer service skills of a bulldog chewing a wasp!

A real disappointment and I swiftly changed hotels after 1 night. Poor value for money.

“Lovely staff, shame about the Manager!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2009

What can I say?! Quaint hotel, bags of period charm, light airy bar area and comfortable rooms. My qualms would lie with the hotel manager, not a pleasant man and not, according to locals, at all pleasant to his staff who were incredibly diligent and curteous.

The food was extremely poor and my advice would be to employ a new friendly manager and proper chef and this could really be a place worth a second visit!

“The George Hotel......”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2008

Less than average hotel for the price....
Got into bed at 10.45pm and the leg fell off the bed, as such we got moved to another room (which required us to pack our stuff up). This room was over the public bar so was noisy until the bar closed and the customers left.
Did not recieve any sort of apology the next morning or when we checked out.
Breakfast was ok. Would not have stayed a second night.
Rooms were clean though.
Would not have felt like this if we had recieved a better level of customer service - shame, because it could be so much better.

  • Liked — located on the high street
  • Disliked — poor level of customer service
