Getting to Tobago from North America is not easy, but once we arrived at Scarbourgh airport our holiday started with a warm greeting from the Palms Villa resort director, David, who’d been waiting a long time for our "island-time" delayed flight. He welcomed us as old friends and accompanied us to the car rental office, where he once again patiently waited while we got the paperwork filled in.
Once at the villa (Tea House) we were met by Kathy, the head of the service staff who show us around the villa & the gated compound. She too was welcoming and concerned that we’d missed the home-cooked welcome meal she prepared for us the previous evening – our original arrival date. Fortunately we got to enjoy the reheated version, she's a terrific cook!
We were the only guests at the resort for the first 4 days, of our 7-day stay. It was like having our own private estate. The villas are beautiful (I love old colonial) and they think of everything (e.g., a little Xmas tree to make the season bright).
They are just the right mix of comfort, luxury and service. The amenities are well cared for (house & pool are spotless) and the staff discretely arrives every morning to tidy up and change linens. Kathy drops in from time to time to make sure everything is going well, and David is available whenever necessary or requested. He was very knowledgeable about the property and the island in general. We greatly enjoyed our conversations with him.
The staff made all the arrangements we requested - scuba diving, golf tee times, dinner reservations. The only disappointment was that the office manager did not confirm one of these reservations so we showed up to the popular new restaurant, Café Coco, only to be turned away. Not a problem because by then we'd wound down to island ways and ready to adapt. Though we never got to sample what is reported to be a fabulous new eating venue for Tobago, we had lots of good meals with good service almost everywhere we went on the island.
The kitchen at the villa is well equipped (there’s also a gas bar BQ), so we also enjoyed cooking the local fare. We learned where to buy fish, straight from the fishing boats, and how to negotiate the supermarkets, which are plentiful in this part of the island. Speaking of which, the villa's location is great! It's an easy drive to everything (beaches, shopping, airport). This was very important since the airlines lost two of our suitcases for 4 days and we had to buy replacement bathing suits and the like. Though you're not on the water, the villa has views and a micro-climate that is easily 5 degrees cooler than the Lowlands (as the call it) because of the sea breezes. Our two adult children who jointed us in this family vacation were just as happy staying at the villa's pool as going to Pigeon Point. That says a lot for the villa!
Overall, this was a great, great spot for our family’s Xmas holiday.
