This was my first trip to Tobago and I was excited to see the photos of this hotel and the wonderful description on its website. Unfortunately, the hotel looks nothing like the pictures and is even less inviting than the description. It is far from the main attractions that a 1st timer would want to see, and we had to struggle to figure what to do in the area. Luckily we had the help of a wonderful taxi driver to help us out. I will give a brief summary of my recent experience at this hotel.
Location: In Mount Irvine area of Tobago, near the Mount Irvine beach. Far from anything touristy and any of the major attractions of Tobago. Very quiet area, which was not necessarily a bad thing. I slept well once I got over the initial shock of the hotel.
Basic amenities: there are no wash cloths available. I have never been to a hotel with no wash cloths. I was told that they are simply not available and never have been. There was a broken light in our room. There is a kitchen area with a microwave, rangetop, and refrigerator.
Cleanliness: the furniture is dingy from the front office couches to the furniture in the room. The ceiling of the bathroom was peeling with mold and the bathtub/shower had mildew in it. I have stayed in modest hotels all over the world, but cleanliness has never been an issue and this hotel was not necessarily cheap when compared to other places in Tobago. The blankets were also less than clean. In the kitchen, an awful smell came from the microwave which made all of us nauseous.
Helpfulness: We changed from 2 rooms to a single room. We had been charged a portion of the cost prior to arriving. When we arrived, there had been no correction in the total cost of the room and it was a big struggle to get our refund back. As well, the front office closes at 6pm daily, so good luck if you need anything after 6pm.
On-site internet: The internet is available and runs at a reasonable speed.
On-site pool: The pool was filthy and we spent no time in it.
On-site restaurant: We have no idea what the hours are and what is served there as we wanted to distance oruselves as much as possible from the hotel. There are some restaurants & roadside food stands within walking distance, but everything closes pretty early in this part of Tobago.
Closest beach: Mount Irvine. Yes, it is within walking distance. But be careful not to get hit by a car while walking. Very few people at this beach and none of the boat tours, jet skis, souvenirs that you will find near Store Bay.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone--even those of us who are used to just having a modest place to lay our head at night. This stay was the most unpleasant part of my trip. I would recommend staying at one of the bed & breakfast inns in Store Bay if this is your first time to Tobago, as it was mine.
