Let's begin by saying that we were on our Honeymoon, so we were in that unique blissful state known to all newlyweds, which may result in lending a tad bit of bias to this review. We found the Finca el Tossal in Alistair Sawday's "Special Places To Stay." And he wasn't lying! This place is super special and perfect for a complete getaway from crowded beach towns. Built high along a mountainside, the stunning views greet you every morning as you open your windows and gaze across the valley. The rooms are simple but elegant, clean and private, with more than enough space...my only gripe (and I mean my ONLY gripe), and it's purely a personal preference, but the bed was too firm for my taste...maybe I'm a bit of a wuss, but that's me, and, really, a small price to pay for the rest of the Finca experience.
And by experience, I mean waking up to the aforementioned incredible views every morning, no cars, no noise (okay, maybe a distant rooster crowing). Then eating a breakfast of wonderful cheeses and meats and bread, a cup of strong coffee, a glass of fresh juice followed by a quick dip in the pool. Then maybe a drive up into the valley to explore the winding mountain roads, or heading on the short drive (10-20 minutes) to any number of beaches (we really enjoyed Villa Joyosa). After splashing about in the Med for a couple of hours, you head back up that "precipitous track" (as Allistair calls it) to enjoy a long siesta by the pool, or on the shaded, raised yoga porch (my wife's favorite spot) with a book, a beer, and your beloved lying next to you (softly snoring away). And then ending the day with one of Sonia's AMAZING dinners!
We stayed for 4 nights and if we hadn't prepaid on the next place we would've GLADLY stayed on longer.
Now keep in mind, it is a tad remote, so if you are the kind of namby-pamby traveller that needs big, no-brainer resorts, well, maybe the Finca is not the place for you. Getting up to the Finca was definitely a minor ordeal, one road was completely out, but there was another way up (and preferable, to be honest)--it gets rocky and steep and, yes, "precipitous," but that's kind of the point, right? Isn't that the definition of "get-away?" So if you indeed want to get away, Torsten and Sonia have succeeded in providing just that place. The prices are more than reasonable and I can't sing enough praises of these incredible hosts. They're fabulous and the Finca el Tossal (built by Torsten himself) is a reflection of their wonderful spirit. Enjoy! (...we sure did)
