“Direct Response to Traveljunkies188 Review”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

We are 4 adults and 4 teens who travel to the Caribbean every year. Several years, including this past November, we have stayed at South Sound Villa. While no private rental home in the tropics can ever be perfect, we have always had the closest thing to the perfect vacation at SSV . . . i can only conclude that these people from New Jersey are...(well, what would be a nice way to put it...i can't think of one...so in order to not be banned from Tripadvisor for profanity...) "vacationally challanged"

The house IS very remote ! That is the charm of it . . . an entire 2 mile wide bay ALL to yourselves ! And yes, you drive down a quaint dirt road through a rain forest where cows are grazing (I guess that qualifies as "a farm" to some), sometimes you have to get out and shoo them off the road . . . that's part of the fun of the place. Malodorous ? Oh please.

We were aware the house has no air conditioning, and it is hot in the Caribbean...duh. Between the ceiling fans in every room and the constant wind, we were fine. The windows and screens were all fine. And never in any of the three times we have been to SSV has the pool been less than immaculate. We had a problem with one toilet, instead of whining we just used the other 3 toilets on the property untill one of the staff came and fixed it. All 8 of us used the kayaks extensively, they were great - the entire bay is calmed by a barrier reef, unless you are a total woosie you'll have a ball on the kayaks. The snorkeling and diving is the best on the entire Island - stingrays, eagle rays, huge parrot fish out by the cut in the reef...but you aren't on a dive charter with everything done for you . . . getting back into the boat may be challenging for some, but teens and adults in any decent physical shape will have no problem. And the motor worked fine last November.

We bought delicious food at the store down the street, (no need to bring your own, they have Tyson frozen chicken, Nabisco cookies, etc. etc) and prepared great meals in the kitchen, ate them in the dining room, and had no more ants than at any other home we have rented in Virgin Gorda, Tortolla, St. John, St. Martin, Saba, Provo, Turneffe Island, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, Cozumel, New Providence or Barbados.

My wife and I slept in the bedroom by the pool every night with the door open. No bugs bugged us. We did not see one cockroach. We did not see one rat, let alone a herd of them yanking our steaks off the grill.

It is a shame that there are no provisions within Tripadvisor to somehow screen out vacationers who are obviously not being truthful...for whatever reason. Maybe the place was "not for them". I would suggest that Traveljunkies188 pick a vacation spot that they can better relate to. Maybe Atlantic City.

“A wonderful paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

The Villa sits at the corner of South Sound. It's secluded and perfect for those seeking a private getaway. All the comforts of home, with the benefit of the incredible views, snorkeling available at your doorstep, a beautiful refreshing pool & a great deck facing the ocean to enjoy the view all day long.
The Villa is surrounded by beautiful wild flowers with colorful butterflies fluttering about.
its like a scene from a disney movie, but real!
I went snorkeling and saw Eagle Rays, sting rays, puffer fish, sea turtles & millions of vividly colored fish in the naturally protected cove. It's like having your own private island.
The Villa is surrounded by nature and wild life, coming from NYC it was great to explore the surroundings and see what I could find. Colorful lizards, exotic birds, butterflies, and the friendly resident hen keep you company.
Available to us was a kayak which we took out to explore the coast, more wild life to check out from the kayak.
We were perfectly happy relaxing in our private paradise. But if we wanted something different, there are several resorts a short drive away, with great restaurants and bars.

The Villa is not a sterile cookie cutter resort. It is a private, beautiful & relaxing place to enjoy all the wonders nature has to offer. I love it so much, I'm planning to have my wedding there later this year.

I highly recommend South Sound Villa & I'm looking forward to our return.

“Dr's Order-Go NOW!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

So where do I begin..was it the scenic winding road that showed the villa as it stands from afar as we drove from the ferry to arive at a private estate that first tells you, this will be a most memorable vacation..or is it once you pull in to the drive way that you quickly realze that you are exactly where you are meant to be and could not even dream up how picturesque and private the setting is!
Yet, close to all- Leverick Bay, Spanish Town...etc...
The home is a caribbean beach home- on it's own sound- private swimming, snorkling or kayaking on your own beach where you can swim ith the fishes and then dip into a seamless pool if you prfer...The home is large enough for a family or multiple couples or two families to easily share yet maintain their privacy if so desired!
The amenities are wonderful- well stocked kitchen, and even a hammock to swing on as you watch the morning sunrise in a completely awe inspiring view of your own private sound!

This will be a dream come true and not a once in a lifetime experience as you will want to return again and again-as I have year after year!! Do not miss out!! Head there as soon as you can...

“A tropical paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2010

Our group of from 9-11 people have stayed at South Sound Villa a week at a time during the summers of 2005-2007, and we had a wonderful time each stay. The villa is located on Mattie Point that juts out into South Sound and the constantly refreshing trade winds. The place was very comfortable for our large group, yet gave each of us the requisite privacy. Being avid and well-traveled snorkelers, we were especially wowed by the snorkeling to be had right off the dock. The fish life is some of the best that we've seen in the Caribbean; what a treat to have such ready access to this glorious marine life. The location is stupendous, the people friendly and the experience is unforgettable. Thanks for sharing your place Thorsten.

Best,

John Walsh and 'the pod'

“Stay Away!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2010

Terrible, awful, overpriced and disgustingly dirty! Where to begin? How about the owner of the house telling me how great this house is and how much fun it is to be on the water and have the use of a small boat at your private dock? Yeah, right, until I arrive and realize the boat is an old, beat up piece of junk with a motor that won't start. So I call the owner, Thorsten Cook, and ask for some help. He says he's surprised to hear this and tells me some one will come by to take a look at it. Two days pass and more phone calls to the owner until finally the gardener comes by. He does not know much about boat motors except that the last time someone rented the house, the motor would not start and the owner sent it off somewhere to try and fix it. I call the owner again and he tells me it will probably take weeks to get it fixed. Why not just get a new motor, I ask? He tells me I should have read over the rental contract more carefully, which states he is not responsible
for providing a boat with a motor! The gardener tells me he is not surprised at this comment from the owner. The place was FILTHY dirty, one bedroom smelled terribly of urine(which we were unable to use), every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen had bug and/or lizard poop in it, and the sheets on the beds were very worn. Bugs, bugs, bugs everywhere inside, both dead and alive. Mr. Cook also promised a mid week cleaning/housekeeping, which never was done. There were many items broken or not working, including the VCR, kayak paddles, crank handles to open and close windows, to name just a few. The quality was that of a cheap Motel 6, although the views from the house were stunning. I spent well over $1000 per night for my weeklong stay in a dump. Do yourself a favor and Stay away, but if you must rent this place, be very cautious to believe what the owner tells you. I'll try to add some very telling photos soon.
