“Great rooms, service and breakfast - some distance from the city center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2007

DCU has recieved both good and bad reviews. To me, the goods overshadow the bads. Actually, there aren't too many negatives to point out, at least not to a young student traveling with the intention to explore.

First things first; location. The University is situated fairly far from the city center - at least for walking. Getting to and from the sights of Dublin are quite easy though. There are several buses passing by and stopping right outside the entrance to the school. Bus 16 and 19A go continiously and only cost 1.40 euros each way (remember exact change) and it takes about 15 minutes. The University lies in Glasnevin, and there is a 'center' with pubs, a few restaurants and a very nice Botanical Garden. The stadium is also not too far away. According to other sources there is a mall 5 minutes from the school, but I never made it there myself. Just around the school there is a gas station, grocery and pub. There's also a shop on the campus area. Still, one quickly realizes that it's downtown it's all happening and strolling around the surrounding area of the campus could be a bit boring and disappointing.

The area of the school was okay, nothing fancy, with a park and a playground for children. For an extra charge one could also use the spa/swimming pool. The receptionists were all very generous and helpful at all times.

The rooms were surprisingly large and comfortable. The room I got even had a small TV. The bathroom was large and up to the standard of a hotel - and the bed was even comfy. Clean sheets - and new towels every day made the experience even better. There was also a leisure area with sofas and a kitchen corner. Complementary coffee and tea could be collected here at all times.

Now, many have complained about noisy Italian students. I have to agree - in the evenings it could become a bit noisy. I stayed there a weekend, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening I could hear people outside. Still, it got quiet quite quickly. Only one evening did the 'students' (I do think they were actually just young tourists also) start screaming and singing for some time. Closing the window, though, would do the trick. As mentioned, this only became a problem one night, and just for around 20 minutes. Having a room with window out towards the other buildings made it easy to hear any sound - like when other tourists were dragging their luggage across the area. This was never annoying, though.

Breakfast was excellent. You get a voichoure of 8.5 euros and can collect various food up to that amount; sandwitches, scones, juice, warm dishes, patries etc. There are a lot to choose from! One problem though, is that the prices may not be well enough marked. It was quite easy ending up with food above 8.5 euros, resulting in having to pay the extra amount cash. Also, none of the products seemed to have any expiry dates labeled.

All together, DCU can provide quite nice accomodation to a budget price!

  • Liked — Cleanliness, great breakfast, cheap prices, hospitality, comfortable rooms
  • Disliked — A bit distant from downtown, not much surrounding attractions, some noise, the unmarked breakfast rates

“Beware Not A Hotel !!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2007

We booked this via Ryan Air website through Expedia believing that it was a 3 star hotel situated in the grounds of the university. It's not!!!! This accomodation is student accomodation sold to the general public under false trading description. After arriving at the airport , at midnight, amass thousands of other people we eventually found a bus that would take us close to the "Hotel". The walk in the middle of the night was long and scary. We were given the keycard to our room by the night security. When we entered the room we wanted to cry. Instead of the double bedded room, with tea and coffee making facilities we were faced with a students twin bedded room, no kettle etc, only one mirror in the bathroom, not ideal for applying makeup and drying your hair !!! There are no curtains at the window just a plain cream roller blind, and plain cream walls, cheap wood affect furniture with kitchen work tops as the desk/dressing table area. We queried this immediately, the night security man couldn't help, customer care helplines were closed. Next morning reception gave us a kettle, but there were no cups ANYWHERE !!! the so called communal kitchen was cupboard bare !!! We travelled into City Centre, went to Tourist Information and booked ourselves into Cassidy's Hotel, who after hearing of our plight, upgraded us to an executive room for the price of their standard room. Cassidy's was fantastic !!!!!!!! DO NOT BOOK THIS IS YOU ARE EXPECTING A HOTEL - IT IS NOT AND AS SUCH SHOULD NOT BE ADVERTISED AS SUCH !!!!

“Good and bad points”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2007

Good points were the friendly and helpful receptionists , clean towels every day and fantastic breakfasts.
Bad points were the foreign students - mainly Italians who shouted outside the residences late at night/early in the morning as they returned from socialising, the different lot of Italian students who congregated noisily in the courtyard at 4 am on our leaving day with their luggage prior to departure then proceeded to wheel their suitcases over the cobbles past our accommodation, and the trolleys used by the cleaners which bumped noisily over the cobbles early in the morning. This was all heard clearly even with the windows (doubleglazed) shut.

An ideal place for seeing Dublin if you don't want to be in the busy noisey centre.Easy to find from the airport.Situated on the campus with all the sports facilities, and hotel amenities you could ever require....beautiful avenue down to campus...
Ample secure parking, excellent helpful local staff on the reception, very knowledgable.
rooms basic student accomodation but freshly decorated and very clean......bathroom very spacious and a powerful shower to wake you up with gallons of piping hot water.....
Breakfast served a little walk away in the posh dinning hall
club 1843, very impressive and excellent choice of menu both breakfast and lunch,at a good value price,no dinner but out in the town for that.....
Bus to town only $1.00 and plenty of buses.
Taxi back just $10.00 in the early hours......
Missed having a tv/radio in room for company, shared Kitchen with every modern piece of equipment, huge fridge freezer to chill the wine......couches and easy chairs to laze into........
Supermarket short walk away over main road....no problems at all.......

“very noisy teenage kids”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2007

We stayed at this hotel last week. The room was clean, and primitive. Shower only had a curtain, so water always ended up on the bathroom floor. Reminded me of gym school showers. I would consider this a 2 star hotel.

A lot of teenagers there for summer school and were very noisy. Not much supervision (they were rude, noisy and didn't seem to care).

The hotel was a bus ride from Dublin, but nothing to do in the immediate area as far as restaurants. The next time I'm in dublin I would try to stay in the city.
