These gulf beaches are indescribably beautiful. We arrived on this fragile barrier island as the sun was setting, turning the powdery white sand the most delicate shades of pink. Here and there surviving bits of beach grass hinted at what this place must have looked like not too many years ago.
Now the beach is lined almost entirely with behemoth concrete condo and hotel buildings. The island seems crushed and we felt heartbroken. That’s why we chose Days Inn. It’s a mere three stories high and so much more appropriate and lovable in scale. Our ocean-view room was cheerful and had a fridge, microwave and a small kitchen sink. It wasn’t fancy, but totally adequate, clean enough and extremely affordable.
That said, much of this wisp of barrier island has indeed been protected. The development is concentrated in certain densely built areas. The buildings range from undistinguished to truly hideous but there are miles of pristine beach to enjoy.
