“Great rustic campground”

Our family of 4 tent camped for several nights in this great campground. The camp hosts were friendly and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was good. Ice and Firewood were available on-site for a reasonable price. The showers were clean and hot, and despite there being only 2 showers, I never needed to wait in line.

There were sites that were less than ideal due to small size, weird layout or proximity to the bath house, etc. Like any tent camping, it is advisable to call ahead and find out which sites are best suited for tents. I called several times with questions, and each time they were happy to help out. One of the ladies even walked up to the available sites to be sure she was giving me good information. Many of the sights around the playground are good sites for tents.

The campground is fairly close to gas and groceries, and very close to Rocky Mountain National Park. The wildlife experience was exceptional. Lots of deer and elk in the area.

This is a family campground, and my daughter quickly made new friends at the playground. If you don't like the sounds of kids playing , running around and screaming, this might not be the spot for you. For us it was perfect! The kids loved it. A small deer walked up to them at the playground. Almost close enough to pet it.

I have stayed at a lot of campgrounds, including completely primitive sites with only vault toilets available. Estes Park Campground at East Portal is now one of our favorites. The kids were already asking when we would come back before we were even packed up.

Great experience, great campground!

“Love This Place”

We stayed here last week and LOVED it! The bathrooms were clean and showers were hot. The staff were very nice and knowledgeable. There was ice and firewood for sale on site. The campground has by far the most rustic and natural location around....there were trees everywhere. Elk and deer grazed within 15 feet of our site. Even though it is a good distance from downtown, the free city shuttle comes out once an hour to take you into town to eat, shop, or catch the hiker shuttle into RMNP. We plan to stay here every time we come to EP.

“Great For People That Enjoy Camping-Not a Luxury Site!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

We camped in early August, and stayed in a tent with no hookups. Our campsite was at the bottom of the mountain and offset from the main area, which was perfect other than walking up the mountain to get to the bathrooms, but we wanted exercise anyway! The views from the campground are beautiful and it is very quiet at night. While we were there, the bathrooms were clean, the showers always worked, and the woman in the front office was so nice and willing to help. Unfortunately, since they just took over this campground, they have realized that the campsites need to be remeasured, as some RVs will not fit in the spaces that the website claims they do. But if you call, they are more than willing to help find a spot that will fit your RV, as we witnessed while buying wood. It's not the woman at the front office's fault and I was sad to hear that so many people have cussed her out for something beyond her control. The park ranger enforces all of the rules strictly, so be aware of the rules and you will be fine. Our only issue while camping was that it rained nonstop, which is obviously not anyone's fault. If you want to "camp" with perfectly level sites (this is the side of a mountain people!), bathrooms that are like your own home, and a mini golf course go to Jellystone and don't complain when you have to camp for real when you choose this campground.

“Stay Away - get a better value for your money elsewhere!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

OK, I get this is a rustic campground in the mountains, but come on - NOWHERE on our teeny campsite was anything close to level to pitch our tent. The whole site inclined. There is primitive, no frills camping, and then there is this campground. Not much difference. We made do for 3 days, but that wasn't the worst. The sign on the bathhouse says it is cleaned once a day, but I couldn't tell. Flush toilets didn't flush, showers had no pressure, just trickled out, and even shut off mid-shower. Also, shower floors were slimy and full of debris (hair, mud, paper, etc.). For all the fees you have to pay to stay here, at least the bathroom and showers should work!

Adding to our frustration was the fact that, literally, all the campsites around us were reserved by a cult comprised of a bunch of college kids, so the whole time we were there, we had to deal with group cult meetings, singing/chanting, cult rituals and exercises, cult members walking through our campsite at all hours - even the middle of the night, obnoxious cult members, etc. If you have the gumption to stay here, maybe ask beforehand if a large group has most of the sites reserved. This group basically ruined our stay and the management is so inflexible they won't let you move campsites, even to ones unreserved.

We love the town of Estes Park and the Rocky Mountains, but on our next trip we will put our money elsewhere, maybe a cabin by the river. So, to sum up, sites are on top of each other, unlevel, toilets and showers dirty and non-operational, management ineffectual, take your chances with neighbors, because, believe me, you are basically living on top of each other.

Stay away from this campground, you're vacation will be ruined if you stay here.

“Good Location, Small Close Sites, Terrible Showers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

Stayed in EPCG(East Portal) for 5 nights. Tent camped w/H20 and Elec. Saw several people with midsized (17-20 ft) campers not be able to get into sites. Descriptions of sites are very misleading and they are laid out terrible. Showers are terrible, if you turn around in them you bump the controls and either scald or freeze yourself. Very small, impossible for an adult to spray lower parts, shower heads don't move much... No shower doors just curtains. A lot of the sites have the next door neighbor firepit right next to your tent or camper (not good). We had a Tent 13x11 and 9x9 Gazeebo and basicly had to park in the road... did I mention small, terrible layouts? The only good thing about this CG is its location, rural and you don't have to go into (EP - Little Gatlinburg) to get into RMNP. Rather Rude Park Ranger, but we had no issues. Will stay at KOA or JStone or some other place with better facilities....
