“Nice Campground in Less Busy Part of Park”

Hoh is a three-loop, self check-in campground nestled into the rainforest along the edge of the Hoh River. It's a short walk from the Hoh Visitor Center, two short trails and one longer trail. Loop C has an amphitheater with ranger programs several nights a week in the summer. Both Loop A and Loop C boast sites along the river's edge. They go quickly, but it's worth it to get there around check-in time (11:00) to try to snag one. Herds of Roosevelt elk often come to the riverbed to drink in the mornings and they're easily visible from the riverside sites. Because this is a self-service site, be sure to bring exact change for camping and firewood fees. During our trip in July 2009, camping was $12/night and wood $5/bundle.

The Hoh area isn't as crowded as the more accessible east side of the park (Heart o' the Hills), nor are the sites as packed together as the online-reservable Kalaloch campground next to the ocean. However, it's also in an area less dense with attractions than those two sites. Hoh is a lovely escape for those who want the convenience of running water and car-camping in a quiet, old-growth forest.

“Decent campsite in a great setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2008

This campground has a small number of river-adjacent sites, so show up shortly after checkout time to snag a good site. The rainforest setting is lovely, but because much greenery has been clearcut to make campsites, the scenery is a far cry from the lush trails around the nearby Visitor Center. Sites vary in size, but most are fairly small and only somewhat private. And though this should be obvious, remember that this is a rainforest, and probably not the best choice unless you're physically and mentally prepared to get wet. Even during the dry season, expect to find your firewood, tent, and everything else you leave outside wet from the morning dew.
