“Great Location for a Cave Tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

I recently stayed here to go on a tour at MCNP. I stayed in Sunset Terrace and had an end unit which was great. No noise (not many people there at this time of year) and I saw lots of deer and wild turkeys. There were a couple of bugs in the room, but that didn't really bother me too much. Housekeeping was friendly and location is great-I could just walk over to the Visitors Center to catch my tour. Don't miss the Old Guides cemetery which is close to the rooms.

Room Tip: Get an end unit

“I loved it here....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

This was the final stop of a 10 day road trip. We stayed in the Sunset Terrace rooms, they are quite roomy and clean. The beds were comfortable and the wildlife was fantastic, the deer came right up to us as we sat outside...fed them dates and banana.
You have to remember that you are in a National Park, the rooms are dated and have a "musty" smell to them but it isn't unbearable. I turned on the air and it controlled the mustiness nicely. Price wise..again look where you are.. the rooms are cheaper during the week and go up about $30.00 on the weekend....I will still return and do it all again.
I liked it here because of location, we experienced 2 cave tours and hiked 4 trails in the vicinity of the visitor's center. We didn't have to drive in from outside the park. We ate both days at the hotel restaurants and the meals were good and very reasonable.
We couldn't pick up the wifi from our room, but it was just a short walk to the visitor's center and they have a nice sitting area with a fireplace.
You do have a refrigerator, coffee maker. television (good reception) and a phone. I suggested that they add a microwave as the restaurant closed at 7:30 this time of year, I would have got a pizza to go for later.
Night falls quickly and I went to sleep early, I was also up by 6am to start my adventures each day......Get back in touch with your senses...you will love it here.
Oh, almost forgot, It was quiet....no partying, no screaming children, no dogs barking.
If you are wondering about the difference between the sunset terrace and the heritage trail rooms, it is size the heritage trail rooms are about 30% smaller, and there is more activity at the hotel area,

Room Tip: If you like the quiet, choose the sunset terrace rooms. If you want to be in the center of all the...

“Reminded me of summer camp...and its pet friendly!”

The worst part about planning a weekender, in my opinion, is finding a place that takes dogs and isn't a flea bag, itself. The Woodland Cottages at Mammoth Cave Hotel are pet friendly, they don't mind if you crate your dogs for a short time to visit the caves or grab a bite and leashed pets are allowed on all hiking trails, a couple of which are very close to the Woodland Cottages for jaunts and potty breaks. In case you don't like to crate your pets, they have outdoor kennels on the property that are free of charge if you are a guest.

As far as the rooms themselves go, they have a minimum of two beds, a refrigerator, a desk, a front porch, lots of sitting room and private bathrooms with showers. They have really big screened windows and doors that open to let in the fresh breeze. Everything is wood, so you don't have to worry about any old nasty carpet, and maid service comes daily and everything is very clean. Our room came with a ceiling fan too and we were literally feet away from plenty of parking.

What the front desk doesn't tell you, however, are there are no TVs - at all - in the Woodland Cottages. That was an adjustment, but a nice one (bring board games). The cottages are plank wood construction, meaning they are not insulated. It was pretty cold the couple of nights we stayed and there was no central heat (or A/C), so if it wasn't for the two dogs we brought, we might have froze in our sleep. That hot shower in the morning, on the other hand, was quite a welcome experience.

The restaurant is a short walk and I hear they even have delivery services of some sort, though we carried out most of our meals. The food is good, but the selection is limited and they close early. We missed them one night and had to drive to town to get dinner. Its about 15 minutes one way, so be sure to plan ahead if you eat late. Grilling at your cottage is prohibited (and can land you a ticket) and the picnic area, where you can grill, closes at 8pm. Like I said, plan ahead.

The cave tours are amazing - we recommend the Star Chamber tour - and the trails are well maintained. We also found out that fishing is free anywhere in the park, as long as you follow the rules about bait and bag limits. We would recommend this place to everyone - just keep in mind the Woodland Cottages are just what they say they are - rustic, but with flush toilets.

Room Tip: If you are bringing pets, the Woodland Cottages are your only choice on the property, unless you wan...

“Book a Sunset Terrace Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

Booked at the MC Hotel for the convenience of the location; The Sunset Terrace rooms are a strip of motel rooms probably built in the 1950's and set away from the noise of the hotel lobby and the attached two-story brick 1960's Heritage Trail rooms.

The Sunset rooms are a retro delight; I am age 62 and when I first saw the buildings I thought "this is really nice." Reminded me of childhood travels..

Rooms are Large, Clean, Inviting, Lot's of Windows. Each evening there were deer grazing outside our window. Room had a 'fridge, wi-fi, cable TV with a good selection of channels.

As mentioned in other reviews, the hotel restaurant is excellant. There is also a minimart and post office in the vicinity.

Warning: The routing through the parking lot at the visitors center is confusing and the park security patrol will stop you if you are going the "wrong way".

If I were driving through this area of the mid-south again I would make a point of staying here, even if I've already seen the caves.

Room Tip: Choose Sunset Terrace Motel-Style room.

“Nice experience- but for one night only”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

We stayed here the night before visiting the caves, which was great to be on location and not queue for tickets/parking. We were given the woodland cottages, since we needed 2 queen beds, and it was probably the best choice for us. The cottages are...a different experience to the usual hotel one and the kids LOVED it. The decor takes you back in pioneer times, like "little house on the prairie", but there were a LOT of insects! I enjoyed sleeping there for the one night but would not do anymore. The food however at the 2 hotel restaurants was very good and great value for money. The staff were overall very pleasant too.
