The worst part about planning a weekender, in my opinion, is finding a place that takes dogs and isn't a flea bag, itself. The Woodland Cottages at Mammoth Cave Hotel are pet friendly, they don't mind if you crate your dogs for a short time to visit the caves or grab a bite and leashed pets are allowed on all hiking trails, a couple of which are very close to the Woodland Cottages for jaunts and potty breaks. In case you don't like to crate your pets, they have outdoor kennels on the property that are free of charge if you are a guest.
As far as the rooms themselves go, they have a minimum of two beds, a refrigerator, a desk, a front porch, lots of sitting room and private bathrooms with showers. They have really big screened windows and doors that open to let in the fresh breeze. Everything is wood, so you don't have to worry about any old nasty carpet, and maid service comes daily and everything is very clean. Our room came with a ceiling fan too and we were literally feet away from plenty of parking.
What the front desk doesn't tell you, however, are there are no TVs - at all - in the Woodland Cottages. That was an adjustment, but a nice one (bring board games). The cottages are plank wood construction, meaning they are not insulated. It was pretty cold the couple of nights we stayed and there was no central heat (or A/C), so if it wasn't for the two dogs we brought, we might have froze in our sleep. That hot shower in the morning, on the other hand, was quite a welcome experience.
The restaurant is a short walk and I hear they even have delivery services of some sort, though we carried out most of our meals. The food is good, but the selection is limited and they close early. We missed them one night and had to drive to town to get dinner. Its about 15 minutes one way, so be sure to plan ahead if you eat late. Grilling at your cottage is prohibited (and can land you a ticket) and the picnic area, where you can grill, closes at 8pm. Like I said, plan ahead.
The cave tours are amazing - we recommend the Star Chamber tour - and the trails are well maintained. We also found out that fishing is free anywhere in the park, as long as you follow the rules about bait and bag limits. We would recommend this place to everyone - just keep in mind the Woodland Cottages are just what they say they are - rustic, but with flush toilets.
