We've stayed here twice and were not disappointed either time. Yes, it is rustic but you don't go there for luxury accomodations. This is quite simply the most magical place on earth. Obviously the bear viewing is phenomenal. This year, we had just taken our luggage to our cabin and set out to visit the falls. I rounded the corner of our cabin and there was a bear napping just feet away from our porch. I slowly backed up and the bear just got up and walked away. The prior visit, one evening we heard a strange scratching behind the cabin and when we went out on the porch to investigate there was a sow and two cubs not more than 10 feet from our porch. However, at no time did we ever feel at risk of danger. The bears are not interested in people. They are just going about their lives.
One activity that isn't promoted too heavily is taking a guided cruise around the lake. One of the fishing guides will take you for a 1/2 day cruise. This excursion was exceedingly enjoyable and we were able to see areas of Katmai National Park that I suspect few people get to see.
As for the dining...my only complaint is that like many restaurants in Alaska, they have a lot of salmon and if you, like us, don't care for salmon, your choices are somewhat limited. However, the food itself is well done especially considering that everything has to be flown in.
The staff is young but very friendly and I never saw anyone not tending to business. Chase, our river guide, was a real sweetheart. The housekeeping staff was punctual and got our cabin cleaned while we were out visiting the fall.
I would caution people to keep in mind that this is not a zoo and sometimes nature doesn't behave the way you expect. The weather is frequently chilly and rainy so take appropriate rain gear. While we were at the lodge this year, the salmon run was much lighter than in prior years, so there weren't as many bears fishing at the falls. However, there were still plenty of bears to see wandering through camp, walking on the lakeshore etc. You just didn't get that iconic picture of the bear catching the fish jumping up the falls. I would like to tell everyone to visit, but I'd also like it to stay off radar so the area doesn't get over ridden by tourists. Quite simply, its the best place on earth!
