“An Excellent Place to Relax Your Being in Preparation for Your Next Adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011 via mobile

This abode of relaxation was perfect for the two of us for pausing between day hikes between the volcano, desert, black sand beach and green sand beach. We stayed in the Heavenly Forest room, which was excellent. Felt like home. The fireplace was a nice touch and came in handy to warm ourselves after trekking miles in the gusty volcano slopes. The caretakers were warm, friendly and helpful. Very much recommended!

“Perfect”

We stayed At the Craters Edge for our Big Island portion of our honeymoon and it couldn't have been more perfect. We loved the quiet tranquility of this place along with the amazing beds and unique rooms. This place is literally built in the middle of a rain-forest and since the rooms are set up off the ground, you truly feel like you are staying in a luxurious tree house. Between the hot tub, balcony, fully stocked fridge, amazing bathroom with heated floor tiles, and the freshly baked bread the host provides, you couldn't ask for anything more. On top of that, we were greeted with a bottle of wine and some gourmet chocolates. The hosts were very helpful and explained to us the ways not to kill ourselves when visiting the lava and driving up the volcano. This place was perfect! If you are visiting the Big Island / Volcano area, you couldn't ask for a better place to stay than this.

“Quiet and Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

At The Crater's Edge is an excellent bed and breakfast. It isn't a traditional bed and breakfast, it is more a room stocked with food. They have items to eat, but do not cook on location (gave a great blueberry loaf and fresh fruit and got a microwave for cooking other items like oatmeal). That does not change anything to me.

The rooms are beautiful. They have a jacuzzi in room and a hot tub, and sauna on site. To get these with any other spot you are paying big dollars. The hot tub and sauna are basically personal as there is only three rooms on this property.

Location is for those who are going to Volcanoes National Park. Hence the name. If you are not expecting to do so don't be silly and give a bad review because location is bad. Pick a better spot! To go to this spot you are having a car. You are 45 minutes from Hilo, 45-60 minutes from South Point, and next to Volcanoes National Park. To me that is just fine as I wanted to go to Volcanoes National Park and don't mind driving this beautiful island.

Out of all the spots I went to on the Big Island this was my favourite. Peaceful, quiet, and relaxing. It is pure pitch black with no city lights. The amount of stars you will see is almost mind blowing (that is if the night is clear!).

Now what really is nice about this place is that it does it best to be 0 environment impact. To me that is invaluable. All the waste that happens in other places this place goes the opposite and somewhat sickens me.

Some notes: Free wifi/internet. Free long distance calling. Free parking.

If the room and location fits your style I would highly suggest staying here.

“Nicely decorated but inconvenient and overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2011

We were in the Nahelanai room. It was very pretty, and there were some nice touches like a bowl of fresh fruit and some banana bread, but overall I would not recommend the place and I would not return. First of all, there was nowhere to put any of your belongings -- no drawers, no shelves, no storage except for a tiny space to hang things tucked behind a table and next to an armoire -- really you could only fit a couple of jackets there and they were not so accessible. Second, it was generally inconvenient. For example, the only sink was a pretty natural wood bowl, but it did not drain well, and it was positioned in such a way that you could not wash your face in it, and had to wash your hands in it very carefully. Third, there was no housekeeping of any kind. In addition, there was no soap or lotion in the bathroom, and you had to rinse off the dishes in that inconvenient sink. There were some packets of oatmeal in the armoire, but when we mixed them up as a late night snack, they were sour and rotten, probably from the damp which made us afraid to touch anything else in the cabinet. In addition, the front wall was all windows and faced the driveway, entrance and street, so you had to keep the curtains shut for any privacy, shutting out the light. The room was also not very large and not within walking distance to the restaurants in Volcano Village.

$250 was too much for this room. I would expect to see this priced around $150.
