“Good old fashioned stick to your ribs kind of food”

My husband and I had watched the sunset from McJagger Museum and were leaving the park and just happened to see the Military Camp sign along the road and my husband who is retired air force wanted to stop in and see the camp. They said that there was a cafeteria onsite and we were welcome to eat in the cafeteria- they said most people say it is pretty good. We were starving after spending all day in the park so we thought we would give it a try- food was excellent, grilled pork chops, salad bar, baked potato bar, rolls, soft serve ice cream and a drink for $15 each and you don’t have to be military to eat here- they said that they serve civilians as well as ex-military personnel. This was better than any meal we had in Hilo, would definitely eat here again.

“Must Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

The cozy cottages are heated and sports a wood burning fireplace. Much needed. It gets awfully cold. The bowling is awesome but the food is very slow coming out of the kitchen at the alley. The buffet the next day made up for it. Only $10!
Right in the Volcanoes National Park, come back and relax. Absolutely loved it!

“Only place to stay in Volcano National Park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Not only is KMC the only place available to say in Volcano National Park, but it is the only one you should consider.

If you're eligible to stay (members of the Canadian Forces are welcome too), prices are significantly lower than the alternative - cottage rentals in the area.

In addition to a clean and decent facility where you don't pay sales tax for to stay, you're not dinged with sales taxes on purchases at the General Store or at restaurants in the facility.

“Best location to stay in Kilauea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Location: Second to none. Inside the national park and a couple of minutes from the visitor's center. You get to all the sites before the tour buses get there.
Staff: Very friendly. They really made everyone feel the holiday season by decorating the inside of the main building and the front houses for a friendly staff competition.
Facility: The bowling ally was nice with decent food. The breakfast and dinner buffet was simple but reasonably priced: would definately eat there again. The small seven day store as usual was overpriced but had the essentials. The laundry room had 6 washers and 6 dryers and charged $1.25 for each load. The internet was free as long as you purchased something from the restaurant or store; with purchase they would give a 30 minute free password to use. The game room was a joke. It did have a ping pong table, an air hokey table and two pool tables, but the machine games were terrible. None of the kids we saw there were interested in playing them.
Rooms: We felt as if we were walking into the 1950s. - No thrills. First we stayed in a two bedroom apartment with a fireplace. Small, but the bathroom had been redone, and water pressure was good. Because everything was pretty much sold out during the holidays, we later had to move to a cottage with a kitchen; a bit bigger and with two bathrooms. One with a jetted tub with no showerhead and the other with a regular tub and showerhead.
Because of location I would definitely recommend this stay to any military member.

“Location is everything”

We stayed two night at the camp in December 2011. The accomidations were ver good, and the staff were pleasent and helpful. As a military recreational facility, prices are set by rank. Prices for the upper end of the pay scale are similar to what you might find in Hilo, 26 miles away. However, for enlisted and junior offier ranks this place is a bargain. Our cabin had two bedrooms and two full baths. The living area was spacious and included a fireplace. (It gets cool at these elevations.) Ours only had a small fridge and microwave, but we found it very adequate. The cafe has good family style food at a reasonable cost compared to the tourist areas in Volcano City a few miles away. The best thing, however, is the location. It is inside the National Park and only minutes away from the Visitor Center, Jagger Museum and most of the hiking trails. If you are eligible to stay, I'd recommend the military camp for you visit to Kilauea.
