I had booked a room at Maswik Lodge over a year in advance. But, when we saw the warnings about a winter storm coming, we switched the route of our roadtrip and stayed at the canyon a few days later than originally planned. Thankfully, there was still availability at some of the other lodges. We chose Yavapai West, since it was the least expensive of what was left. I was a little worried that we'd feel 'too far away', since we had originally chosen Maswik since it was a bit closer to the rim. But, location wasn't an issue at all. It made for a nice walk for my husband and I a couple times during our stay. Our room had nice furnishings, comfortable beds and a clean bathroom. There was even enough extra floorspace to be able to blow up an air mattress so the kids didn't have to share a bed. The doors do stick a bit--you almost have to slam them to get them to shut. That's probably not nice for the neighbors, but I didn't hear too much noise either night of our stay. We found the Maswik cafeteria area had more food options than Yavapai, so we ate over there. The ice machines at the west lodge were shut off because of the cold, so I drove over to the East lodge to fill our bucket. There were deer right outside the building I went to! We were able to park right in front of our room. The beds were comfortable, shower was hot. I'd stay here again.
