We enjoyed our late-season stay in a rim-side Pioneer cabin a great deal. The cabin, while rustic, was nicely appointed with high quality linens and bath amenities. The pillow top queen mattress was very comfortable, and the cabin heaters worked very effectively with the cool temperatures at night. In addition to the queen bedroom, the cabin’s other room had a set of bunk beds and a comfortable futon. Since there were only two of us, we had plenty of room to spread out. The extra sink in the “bunk room” was a nice plus, as was the small desk. The 3/4 bath, while small, had an amazing shower with lots of hot water. The cabin also had a small fridge as well as a coffee maker. While there was a phone, there is no TV. Cell phones seem to work fine here, and we heard that free wifi was available at the campground store.
We stayed two nights, and enjoyed nice dinners in the Lodge restaurant both evenings. The food was good, and the service was exceptional. The view was beyond belief! If you want a window seat guaranteed, make a reservation for the first seating when the restaurant opens. Also, be sure to make reservations as soon as your lodging is booked, or you wind up eating quite late. We also enjoyed the Lodge’s rim-side sun room, as well as the lovely outdoor patios. There is also a deli, saloon, post office, and gift shop in the Lodge.
There is an extraordinary contrast with the South Rim – and is much more like what a National Park should be like. While South Rim is like Disneyland, the North Rim is remote and beautiful. We were very fortunate to score a last minute reservation due to a cancellation, but next time we’ll plan further attempt and try to get one of the Western cabins. However, I would not hesitate to go back to the Pioneer cabins or even the motel rooms.
