Our visit to Denali National Park was a venture of many years to visit and camp in most of the National Parks and 49 states. Riley Campground was our choice of campgrounds in Denali mainly for convenience. We planned the bus trip to Kantishna 92 miles into the park and had to catch the bus at the Wilderness Access Center near Riley at 7:30 AM. We walked to the WAC from our campground and just to add the bus trip was fantastic and a must to really see the park. Cars are only allowed to travel on the 15 miles of paved road and tours are the only way to take the remaining gravel road. Our tour saw many sightings of the "big five" which include wolves, grizzley bears, moose, caribou, and dall sheep. We also saw golden eagles, fox and various birds. Our driver/interpreter had a great love for the park and added so much to our journey. A park ranger joined us for the last hour and shared the history of pioneer living and mining. The scenery is breathtaking! Riley is also near the visitor center and Mercantile where hot showers are available for $4.00. There is also free wifi at the Mercantile for those who wish to keep in touch with the world. The campground has private, wooded, graveled sites with picnic tables and fire pits. You choose your own and then self register. There are also nightly ranger-led campfire programs. We enjoyed the one on raptors in the park. There is a dump and potable water at the Mercantile. There is also a dog sled demonstration that is fun to watch with a bus ride from the visitor's center. The only downside is that Riley Campground is near the entrance to the park and there is quite a bit of traffic you can hear. The bus system is free at the entrance area but is a little confusing. Also, there is a supposed fee to enter Denali National Park but there is not a collection kiosk and we were charged our collection through the bus reservation. It seems a little unfair that some pay and others don't. I have no problem with the fee and feel it is my privilege to help support the park service but as the park is growing it would help for everyone to pay their part also. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed our stay at Riley Campground and can now mark off Denali National Park from our bucket list.
