Reservations for the site AND FOR THE PARK SHUTTLES, IN ADVANCE, are a must. You cannot drive past mile 15 on the park road, which is 93 miles long, so you MUST have at least a shuttle ticket to see the best part of the park. (I overheard visitors speaking to staff; and they just found out, on arriving at the park, that they can't drive most of it...hope there were seats left on a shuttle bus!) Had no problem making camp and bus reservations by phone...internet booking didn't work well at all. But I called several times before arriving to make sure reservations for both camp and bus were correct!!
We started our trip as novice RV'ers here, with $22 per night site. There were no hook-ups for the RV, but there were water faucets available to fill water tank and a dump-station. The camp is a short 10 min. walk or free shuttle bus ride to the Wilderness Access Center where all buses onto the 93 mile park road originate.
The camp has a small convenience store (think 7-11) for food, camp supplies, souvenirs, and hot showers ! Overpriced, as expected, but handy...especially the hot shower for 4 bucks after a long day on sightseeing bus or hiking. (Stock up at grocery stores for food/necessities in Fairbanks coming from the north, or in Wasilla or Anchorage coming from the south.) There is still FREE WIFI at this mercantile store, as well.
There are several real toilets with tap water for real campers with tents, and for those of us not keen on RV toilets. Try to get a site near on of the bathroom facilities.
This is NOT roughing it, but it was pleasant, peaceful and convenient to the only access point to get into the park wilderness. We stayed 2 nights here and 2 nights thirteen miles into the park at the Savage River Campsite, which was much more peaceful and "wilder" with moose wandering through at dinner time...but less convenient. Next time we might stay a couple of nights at the Teklanika Camp at mile 29...the only way you're allowed to drive that far into Denali...and really remote!
