“camped at riley creek and wonder lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

wonder lake great for camping in all weather, had 2 covered areas to cook under in rain with picnic tables, Riley Creek however did not have the covered area, the only place covered with picnic tables was the mercantile, not allowed to cook there,it rained aot while there so was disapponted that we had to cook in rain
also, it is a good idea to reserve at least the first nights stay, once there, can reserve the other nights, we had to stay in campground in healy the first night because we did not do this

“Could have stay longer”

We had made reservations for 2 nights toward the end of 10 days with a rental RV. We got into the area a day earlier than expected. We stopped by hoping that we could just add another day. It wasn't a problem.

We could have stayed there a whole week and still not have been bored. The sites are bigger and more private than any other campground that we stayed at. It was great to have the flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities at the campground. One of the best amenities is access to the programs of Denali national Park. We were able to get on a bus right at the campground and head into part of the park. We were able to hike, see the dog kennels and go to the visitors center all without having to drive ourselves. There were also nightly programs put on by park rangers right in the campground. Great learning time for our whole family.

The one thing that worried me when I made our reservations was that none of the sites had hook-ups for the RV. I didn't need to worry. There is an easy to use fixed dump station and water to fill the tanks with right outside the merchantile and it is free for those staying at the campground. Next time we visit we will stay even longer.

“Great "one-stop shopping" campsite IN Denali...will be back.”

Reservations for the site AND FOR THE PARK SHUTTLES, IN ADVANCE, are a must. You cannot drive past mile 15 on the park road, which is 93 miles long, so you MUST have at least a shuttle ticket to see the best part of the park. (I overheard visitors speaking to staff; and they just found out, on arriving at the park, that they can't drive most of it...hope there were seats left on a shuttle bus!) Had no problem making camp and bus reservations by phone...internet booking didn't work well at all. But I called several times before arriving to make sure reservations for both camp and bus were correct!!

We started our trip as novice RV'ers here, with $22 per night site. There were no hook-ups for the RV, but there were water faucets available to fill water tank and a dump-station. The camp is a short 10 min. walk or free shuttle bus ride to the Wilderness Access Center where all buses onto the 93 mile park road originate.

The camp has a small convenience store (think 7-11) for food, camp supplies, souvenirs, and hot showers ! Overpriced, as expected, but handy...especially the hot shower for 4 bucks after a long day on sightseeing bus or hiking. (Stock up at grocery stores for food/necessities in Fairbanks coming from the north, or in Wasilla or Anchorage coming from the south.) There is still FREE WIFI at this mercantile store, as well.

There are several real toilets with tap water for real campers with tents, and for those of us not keen on RV toilets. Try to get a site near on of the bathroom facilities.

This is NOT roughing it, but it was pleasant, peaceful and convenient to the only access point to get into the park wilderness. We stayed 2 nights here and 2 nights thirteen miles into the park at the Savage River Campsite, which was much more peaceful and "wilder" with moose wandering through at dinner time...but less convenient. Next time we might stay a couple of nights at the Teklanika Camp at mile 29...the only way you're allowed to drive that far into Denali...and really remote!

“Best Campground near Park Entrance”

Quiet, private, large sites. Close to everything. There are hot pay showers and free wi-fi (plus outlets to plug in to) at the mercantile building. We stayed one night at a commercial campground outside the park - what a mistake! If we had known about the showers and wi-fi here we would have come straight to Riley Creek.

“camping at riley creek campground”

Great campground to pitch a tent, have a campfire and roast marshmallows. We dont do much camping, but I'm glad we did. Recommend you pick a site that is close to one of the bathrooms with running water and flush toilets. The riley creek store has just about everything you need but be prepared to pay top prices. Would definitely stay at this campground again. They also have free wi-fi around the grocery store and shower area.
they have a few nice hiking trails around the campground.
