“Dog of a place”

Great place for dogs but not a happy experience for anyone else wanting a room to stay. A sign outside welcomes dogs with grudging reference to humans being allowed too.

Very attractive building from the outside, but once inside, beware. Free dog biscuits on the bar should give you a clue. Dogs can outnumber humans at breakfast. Bedrooms are basic (and not too clean), meanwhile very dirty carpets in the residents areas need removing and replaced with something washable.

Breakfast food was substantial even if service on the unpredictable and slow side. You had to ignore the barking as dogs came and went their way.

Actually the bar was fine, the food adequate and the service good. Good range of beers and ciders.

We stayed three nights which was three too many for some of our party.

Unless you are taking Rover and his pals, then stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

“A warm welcome will await you at this very popular inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

We stayed for 4 nights recently, accompanied by our dog. We received a very warm welcome on our arrival and throughout our stay found all the staff, whether behind the bar or at breakfast, to be friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was a hoot with most people bringing their dogs with them. We found this created a lovely atmosphere of chatting guests and sausage-munching pooches. We never opted for the full English, which looked enormous, but stuck mostly to the poached eggs on toast - and it was most refreshing to actually get a decent poached egg for a change. The only disappointment was the smoked haddock, which was overcooked.

We stayed in Room 11 which, although not huge, was charmingly decorated and clean. Our dog is rather large, but there was a handy alcove in front of the wardrobe which was the perfect place for his bed to be placed out of the way. I would also like to mention the generous supplies of tea/coffee/milk provided - there's no worry here that you'll run out of supplies after a measly two cuppas.

The bar menu is pretty huge, as are the portions. We'd probably liked to have had smaller main courses and been able to take advantage of a dessert, although saying that, the dessert menu was more cake-oriented and didn't feature the usual pub fayre of sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake, tiramisu, creme brulee, etc. Would recommend the chilli pasta bake and the chicken curry (although placing a poppadom on top of a hot curry does render it a little soggy). All the food coming out looked lovely (and enormous).

The bar is not open all day, but if you fancy a late afternoon tipple you can walk to Lulworth Cove and take advantage of the pub there, which is also dog friendly.

All in all, an excellent find, especially if you're after somewhere super dog friendly, and we will most definitely be visiting again.

Have just returned this weekend from The Castle Inn completely relaxed and with a grateful cocker spaniel in tow.

All staff were highly professional and the level of service was great. Breakfasts here are huuuuuuuge, as well as the doggy breakfasts provided. You really don't need to eat until dinner time when a varied and delicious menu is on offer. Perfectly situated for long walks along the coast, around the corner from Durdle Door. Looking forward to our next trip here.

“Excellent for dog owners or people who love dogs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

We stayed here for one night and chose this place because we wanted to take our young Jack Russell away with us to see how she got on! The welcome was very friendly and Nibbler (our Jack) was heartily welcomed despite the typical barking associated with her breed. The room was basic and carpets worn etc.. but I don't see how you can expect too much more when this hotel is renowned for being a 'dog hotel'. It was clean enough and actually didn't have the dreaded 'doggy smell'. All amenities were there, tea & coffee making, wardrobe, smellies in the bathroom, towels....etc. The hotel is perfectly located for some brisk and steep climbs up and down the cliffs to Lulworth Cove and Durdle door. The pub/restaurant has a great selection of ales and ciders and the food is very typically of the pub grub style in huge portions. I thought the food was very good and great value for money. The staff were always attentive and friendly. Breakfast was excellent. The place is a bit old fashioned but it's a proper pub, with friendly staff, good food and the dog friendliness is fantastic. It may not suit people who don't have dogs...before I had a dog I probably would have avoided a place like this but as a visit for grub and atmosphere - it's a great choice.

Room Tip: Try to avoid rooms at the front...the road can be quite busy and noisy.
