As a regular traveller to nearby Clonmel for 18 yrs, we decided to try a little change this year, and came accross this hotel by chance, and thought, we'll give it a go.
Firstly, we made tremendous time down from Dublin and arrived outside the hotel at 10am on the Sunday morning Jan 29th.
After sitting for 5 mins or so, a young lady who was the hotel receptionist, we later found out (and she was fantastic for our 5 day stay - Margo i think) met us at the front door.
When we said that we were a good bit early and could we drop our bags in, she had a quick look and told us that we could in fact check in....heaven ,after being up all night.
She then said that we could still get a breakfast if we wanted, and we did just that, and what a breakfast it was (every morning) all freshly cooked in front of your eyes, with as much toast and coffee as you could manage, and served with a smile and a nice bit of chat, no matter who served you.
We then went to our room, and to be honest i was surprised at the space and the quality of the room which had 1 single and 1 double bed, with TV , loads of coffee tea and biscuits, the beds and the pillows were superb and spotless.
The bathroom was modern, tiled, again spotless with plenty essentials for our use.
By 11am we were in the lovely hotel bar with its large wooden bar which seems to give it a retro/modern feel to it.
If you are a sports fan, you can watch both racing channels and two soccer matches on different screens if you wish, as well as your fav soaps if that's what you want.
The bar itself becomes really busy from 11.30 to about 2pm every day with a variety of people and is obviousley a very very popular venue with sky news and sky sports news on both large screens
Just outside the hotel front door you have every establishment you require only yards away.
Two banks next door, newsagent and bookmakers opposite ,local pubs and bars virtually next door, large superstore 5 mins walk away, indian and chinese restaurants 5 mins walk and a large car park opposite at a cost of 2 euro for as long as you like inc overnight.
The dinner menu is very good and the food is absolutely top drawer....a little pricey to be honest 13-14 euro for lasagne and fries, but thats more to do with the pound-euro rate and it is quality.
Nothing is a problem in this hotel for any of the staff and they are always on hand to assist you.
We also had to print our boarding cards for the flight home, and again this was no problem , as we were invited behind the reception to go online and then print them ourselves....free of any charge, excellent.
There are many pubs and bars in the area, but we were delighted to stay in the hotel and enjoy the excellent drinks selection and the great craic.
I could not imagine this hotel getting any sort of poor review and can only imagine that there must be an ulterior motive for anyone who has done so, or they are not genuine reviews.
We will be back again next year for sure (if not before) and thanks to all at the Carraig for a top class holiday.
