“Simply the best......don't look any further”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2011

As a regular traveller to nearby Clonmel for 18 yrs, we decided to try a little change this year, and came accross this hotel by chance, and thought, we'll give it a go.

Firstly, we made tremendous time down from Dublin and arrived outside the hotel at 10am on the Sunday morning Jan 29th.

After sitting for 5 mins or so, a young lady who was the hotel receptionist, we later found out (and she was fantastic for our 5 day stay - Margo i think) met us at the front door.

When we said that we were a good bit early and could we drop our bags in, she had a quick look and told us that we could in fact check in....heaven ,after being up all night.

She then said that we could still get a breakfast if we wanted, and we did just that, and what a breakfast it was (every morning) all freshly cooked in front of your eyes, with as much toast and coffee as you could manage, and served with a smile and a nice bit of chat, no matter who served you.

We then went to our room, and to be honest i was surprised at the space and the quality of the room which had 1 single and 1 double bed, with TV , loads of coffee tea and biscuits, the beds and the pillows were superb and spotless.

The bathroom was modern, tiled, again spotless with plenty essentials for our use.

By 11am we were in the lovely hotel bar with its large wooden bar which seems to give it a retro/modern feel to it.

If you are a sports fan, you can watch both racing channels and two soccer matches on different screens if you wish, as well as your fav soaps if that's what you want.

The bar itself becomes really busy from 11.30 to about 2pm every day with a variety of people and is obviousley a very very popular venue with sky news and sky sports news on both large screens

Just outside the hotel front door you have every establishment you require only yards away.

Two banks next door, newsagent and bookmakers opposite ,local pubs and bars virtually next door, large superstore 5 mins walk away, indian and chinese restaurants 5 mins walk and a large car park opposite at a cost of 2 euro for as long as you like inc overnight.

The dinner menu is very good and the food is absolutely top drawer....a little pricey to be honest 13-14 euro for lasagne and fries, but thats more to do with the pound-euro rate and it is quality.

Nothing is a problem in this hotel for any of the staff and they are always on hand to assist you.

We also had to print our boarding cards for the flight home, and again this was no problem , as we were invited behind the reception to go online and then print them ourselves....free of any charge, excellent.

There are many pubs and bars in the area, but we were delighted to stay in the hotel and enjoy the excellent drinks selection and the great craic.

I could not imagine this hotel getting any sort of poor review and can only imagine that there must be an ulterior motive for anyone who has done so, or they are not genuine reviews.

We will be back again next year for sure (if not before) and thanks to all at the Carraig for a top class holiday.

“great hotel...but ooohh the NOISE!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

This is a lovely hotel, staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast great. Had the "wine and dine" meal on Saturday night and the food was wonderful. Our rooms were at the front of the hotel and were spacious and clean....but...Friday night there was a wedding on and Saturday night a disco next door we could not here the music etc but on both nights people gathered outside the hotel entrance and on the street making one hell of a row till gone 3am so we had very little sleep despite moving up a floor for the Saturday night! I would advise you check out what functions are on if you are a light sleeper.WIFI in rooms (with 2nd connection passwords). Parking in publice carpark over the road from the hotel, 2euros. Locals in the bars are very friendly. Would not recommend the fish and chip shop just along the street from hotel, frozen tasteless fish! Carrick Golf club is a little gem and everyone was very welcoming.

“Welcoming, comfortable hotel, excellent food, friendly & helpful staff”

On arrival at the Carraig we felt welcome even before we entered our room. If you are looking for a snooty hotel with aloof staff - this isn't it. (Carrick on Suir is not a trendy contrived town - it is Ireland in its true form.) Our room was very spacious, bright and airy very clean and quiet. The food was the best that I'd had in all my weeks of travelling in Europe - I am a seafood lover and the Carraig served the most delicious salmon and cod that I've had in many years and the portions were very generous. Their full Irish breakfast, which is included In the price of the room, is very substantial and keeps you satisfied until Dinner time. Every employee of the Carraig was very friendly and helpful. The Carraig is within walking distance of all points of interest for Carrick on Suir and very close in driving distance to Kilkenny Castle, Rock of Cashel, Waterford, Dungarven, Tramore, and many other towns of interest.

“It was perferct for us !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2009

My friends and I are just back from a Saturday overnighter in Carrick-on-Suir (October 2009). We were on our annual motorcycle trip, where we pick a town somewhere in Ireland, ride there, enjoy a night out and ride back again.

Upon entering the hotel, we found the receptionist very helpful and patient with 6 bikers all changing their minds about which room they wanted to stay in. We had booked 3 twins, but in the end, the hotel very kindly accommodated us in 2 twins and 2 singles. (The cost for a twin room was 40euro pp, and the cost of a single was 50 euro – so for 10 euro extra you had your own room)

The climb up the stairs was a bit tricky with panniers and helmets etc., but not a huge burden. I had one of the single rooms which was bright, spacious and clean, with a comfortable queen sized bed. The bathroom was clean and spacious also. I liked the tea/coffee making facility so I could make a flask of coffee for my return journey the following day.

We parked our motorcycles outside on specially designated motorcycle parking spaces. However the manager suggested putting them in a secure location down a lane beside the hotel. To our amazement, the secure location was a disco/dance room inside the hotel itself. What a surprise!

The manager advised us that there was a nightclub which closes about 3AM, and while the bikes would probably be ok, it might be wiser to take them off street just in case some boisterous clubbers decided to fling their leg over them. As it turned out, two bikes were left outside and came to no harm.

We enjoyed a few beers in the hotel bar which was nicely decorated and was very friendly. We then had a few steaks which were absolutely perfect. Everyone enjoyed their meal and commented on the good quality.

After a night on the town we returned about midnight. I have to say the revelries on the street did go on to about 3 or 4 AM. So if you are a light sleeper, make sure you ask for a quiet room at the back (especially Fri/Sat Night).

In the morning, breakfast was quite good – again the staff were both efficient and friendly.

Carrick-on-Suir is a very friendly and welcoming place. I would thoroughly recommend a visit if you enjoy the craic and a good night out. If you’re in Carrick for a night on the town – this hotel is an excellent base. I would stay at this hotel for the friendly staff, nice rooms, good food, good location and excellent value. However I wouldn’t take my granny there – because of the climb to the room and the overnight noise on the street. But I can say - it was perfect for us!
