“Great hotel and a brilliant holiday!”

I cannot say how much I enjoyed our holiday to Long Bay Hotel. It was everything I was expecting and more! No queues for meals at this hotel. Waitress service which was always a treat as we giggled our way through each meal with the sunny smiles given to us by ALL members of staff. The fresh grapefruit is the best I have ever eaten.

Our rooms were cool and clean with a view to die for across the lagoon. My main fear...the mosquitos...never materialised as my room was sprayed liberally each evening. As someone who suffers extreme allergic reaction to bites the hotel's concern ensured my holiday was bite free.

Chris and Dave couldn't do enough to ensure everything we wanted or needed was provided which is the main pleasure of staying at Long Bay. By the end of our third day we knew most of the staff by name (something that would never happen in a larger hotel) and felt extremely comfortable.

The beach bar and the divine beach gave us lazy days just lolling about in the warm clear waters with just enough energy to walk a few steps to the bar for long cool refreshing drinks and pleasant lunches. Sandra and Gary were always there with a sunny smile and a Wadadli beer.

As this was the last week before the hotel closes for the season and very few guests were staying this might have meant we had MORE attention than some of our fellow reviewers...BUT..not one member of staff ignored us or didn't give us great service and we were more than happy for the 10% service charge to be added.

We would certainly recommend Long Bay Hotel and look forward to returning again.

18 - 28 th April...Well my mum looked through Trip advisor about this hotel and only saw 1 small complaint so we booked the hotel. I must say we were surprised by the greeting from the lady in charge, almost " oh lord 2 more guests " was it the cricket that had worn her out?? anyway we were shown to our room, lovely and oldy wordly, by that time its very humid and we are glowing............ alot !! No air conditioning, which we know, but we wished we had realised how humid was humid.....,thank the pope for the fans,so girls, forget the hair, all natrual!!...no one told us about the mosquitoes!!! as we had gone for the cheaper rooms, just 2 feet under the more expensive rooms we got bitten, even though we had sprays and coils, . Our passage from the hotel to our room was full of them, like a mosquitoe ally, but Chris sorted it out for an extra fee cos we could go to a room upstairs. Going to breakfast was an ordeal/ experience, the staff were so unfriendly, you could see other guests faces fall from the looks or the slaming of plates and cups from the 2 waitresses. Do not ask for more than was on the menu!!! Then we found out that you had a small walk to the beach which from the photo we missed,we thought from the photos the beach restaurant was the hotel ( duh) but no prob, it was fine, till the cruise ships came in ( thats the people with the green towels)and they took over the best beach in the island, mum wanted to move hotels it was that bad, thank goodness for our hero, David who shood them away unless they ate or drank from the restaurant, with its pinky sand and clear water, the barracuda thats a resident at the end of the reef, octopus, clear snorkling, the best rum and raisin ice cream from the shack 2 mins walk along clean sand,Rum punches poured by Sandra who was the most friendliest and best bar lady by far! we were in paradise, the colours of blue in the water, no picture can capture! but that happens on Tues and Thurs so we hired a car with another couple we met at the hotel that turned out to be lots of fun and helped make our holiday, even if he cant read a map, good fun, how we kept the sump and exhaust ?? tarmac then sand, terrible roads but oh what fun............ thats why we know we had the best beach, the restaurant at the beach was fine, the hotel food, great first, then ok then great again, the BBQ on Thurs was good to bring people together and the steaks were as good as S.A steak, all in all, the hotel needs abit of TLC,David who took us to Green island, wow and Sandra were great, other staff need to be retired and younger ( as in 40 ish) staff in with a positive attitude, again was it the cricket season???, the hotel closes now for 4 months, the guests were the best, and those who know who they were , made our holiday, its the type of hotel that makes you nice to other people, makes you friendly cos you WANT too ,we are intrested in each other, smiles at each other at breaky and supper even though we had the waitresses from hell, but after a rum punch or two, no worries, its an experience, we do have good memories ............................ especially the Harry Belafonte singer!!! go on, spoil yourself........................

“Desperately needs new staff”

We have just returned from Long Bay Hotel which has so much potential to be an exclusive gem but is let down badly by the staff. We totally agree with the comments of others in that the attitude of the waitress's in the main restaurant is appaling, they are surly, rude and unhelpful and cannot wait to remove plates, even whilst one of you is still eating, in order to lay tables for the next meal. We did also find the breakfast boring, how many ways can you cook eggs & bacon ! Having said that, the meals at the beach bar, especially the barbecue's were very good.
The cleaners also left a lot to be desired, no surfaces were cleaned, although the beds were made & turned down, but any dirt above eye level is ignored. We had heavy rain during one night and woke to find the balcolny under water and rain had come through the roof in lots of places, including our dressing table, the bar was awash as was the reception area and dining room. The mossies were a nightmare. On the plus side the beach is the best on the island, except when the cruise ships are in port, when they are all bussed to the bay en masse, and Dave & Sandra were really nice and helpful. The other guests were a nice friendly bunch and we were at least able to laugh together. The owner did not seem to have any interest in anything other than playing on his P.C.in his bright shorts, T-shirt & cap. Ask him a question and he told you to ask the "girl" (the receptionist who was a large elderly lady).
What a glorious hotel it could be with some cash injection and TLC but it is more like fawlty towers at the moment. Pity.

  • Liked — Beds were v.comfortable, position was superb.
  • Disliked — general attitude of owner & staff, dated bathroom facilities & mossies !

“Finally made it there after 21 years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2007

On a day trip round Antigua in 1986 we stopped at the Long Bay Hotel beach restaurant and had lunch and spoke to a well-known actor we recognised also eating there. He introduced us to the manager, who showed us around one of the Upper Bay rooms.
Come 2007 and I finally made it to the hotel for 12 days from 17 April. Prior to our arrival, Chris was very helpful on e-mail so we came well prepared.
Our Upper Bay room was spacious, with a large very comfortable bed and a lovely view of the Bay. I have never had such good service from maids cleaning my hotel room. Always done by 11am, and nicely too. Very cheerful bunch. The two fans in the room just about coped, with the aid of the trade winds, but air conditioning would be sensible in such very hot weather.
Long Bay beach is still as lovely as it was 21 years ago, and although the Grand Pineapple Beach hotel at the other end has grown from what it was then when called New Horizons, the beach is not crowded. The Long Bay Hotel end of the beach is superior in every way and none of the guests we spoke to would have swapped to air conditioning in the other hotel.
There were cruise days, but the beach at the hotel end never became crowded; neither did it at weekends, when the local population visited. The beach chairs might have been more comfortable and convenient for reading in, but they were fine otherwise, and the umbrellas were a must.
Service at the beach bar was good - food excellent and Sandra was the cocktail star at the hotel, in my opinion. Sam was also good, but we mostly drank rum cocktails before lunch, so were privileged to have Sandra serve us.
Food in the Turtle Restaurant in the main building was good - I'm very fussy, but I never had problems with the four course evening meal. Service in the restaurant? Yes, it was not fast [Caribbean, remember?], and yes, one of the waitresses did look a bit miserable [it became a game to make her smile, and we generally managed]. The waitresses in the evening also served at lunchtime in the beach restaurant during our stay. The hotel was closing until October the week after we left and it could be the waitresses were concerned about that.
Chris the owner was usually around mornings and evenings and we found him quirky in a nice way, sitting at his PC with the cat alongside, and he was very helpful indeed. Dave the manager was ever cheerful and helpful, and one evening he came at once to fix the handle on our toilet cistern, in the absence of other staff.
Guests ranged from those in their late 20s to others in their 60s, though always weighted towards the higher end. We met some interesting people.
I really felt at home in this hotel, never more so than at lunchtime, sipping one of Sandra's cocktails, looking out to the beach and sea. Fantastic.

“Lovely location, but not quite the relaxing experience expected!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2007

We have been to Antigua many times over the past 5 years. This hotel is set in a lovely location within a few minutes walk to the wonderful sandy beach.
The hotel is small, the rooms are adequate, nicely furnished with views over the water sports bay. The fans provided in the rooms were often not enough to cool the rooms. Bathrooms need showers updating. Mosquitos were a problem and when it rains the rooms and hotel floods! There is extensive building work on a new resort in the bay opposite Long bay rooms.
The staff at breakfast and dinner were a constant talking point for the guests. Trying to get a smile from a waitress was impossible. The attitude was really awful... ask for something and you get a huff and rolled eyes! things were slammed down on the table, coffee spilled, and your breakfast order was often wrong! When i repeated a request for some sauce I was told sternly "I'm getting it" ! It never came! this happened several times after which I gave up asking. You really felt that you were an inconvenience to them.
Menu for breakfast was the same every day, dinner changed daily , sometimes good sometimes awful!
Lunch at the beach bar was different. the service was generally good (unless you got a breakfast waitress!) and food was good.
The beach was an experience. The cruise liners seem to bus their guests to that small beach for the snorkelling. Long bay hotel willingly rent out their beach chairs to them and so on some days you are over run with very large, loud groups of people, shouting across to each other . Not exactly the peaceful relaxing location expected!!! Beware the green towel brigade!! Take flight as we did on the days the liners are expected in! The beach is shared with grand pineapple at the other end.. but thats not a problem.
The age range of guests was 20's to 60's during our stay of 10 nights. Entertainment was limited and most guests were in bed by 9.30p.m. We met some very nice people there.
We were also shocked at the 10% tip added to the bill... especially since service was so awful!
In summary, a nice location, lovely beach, hotel is badly in need of a face lift, not just paint! Some staff need urgent training in politeness! Air con is needed in rooms and coffee tea making in rooms would be nice. Some of the staff were lovely, namely Sandra on the bar, and Dave the manager. This could be a real gem but with some urgent work and attention.

  • Liked — the beach and easy snorkelling, lunch at beach bar and bbq evening.
  • Disliked — attitude of some staff was terrible. needs air con.in rooms
