“Nice Diversion”

We stayed for a couple of nights with our two daughters (13 and 10) this summer.

On the positive side the owners were very nice and involved in the operations. They were engaging and friendly. We found the staff similarly very nice. The food was excellent and we very much enjoyed both dinners that we had. In fact, the dinners may have been the best part! The grounds are very relaxing and enjoyable. The various birds (if it is corrects to call turkeys and partridges, birds) walking around and the cute dogs that tag along when you go for a walk were very unique and fun. If the weather is poor (we were not blessed with great weather notwithstanding it being summer) it can be a bit gloomy and dreary with limited things to do (in that the grounds are less enjoyable to walk when it is raining and you cannot sit outside and read a book). The pool is nice but in the summer one would prefer to be outdoors (it is a beautiful indoor pool).

The surrounding area is a bit limited. Vezeley (i may not be spelling it correctly) is a interesting day trip but otherwise the immediate area does not offer that much to do. The adjacent town is not worth much attention. While there are wineries near by it is not like Napa or Sonoma - you do not just drive down a road and drop in to tasting rooms. Getting to wineries and doing tastings appears to require some effort and potentially cost.

The rooms at the chateau are not really luxurious. I am not suggesting that they are not nice, but if you are very discriminating one may find them disappointing. They have attempted to build character into the rooms which i respect and appreciate. But one should not expect a Ritz/Four Seasons experience in the rooms. Some people may say this is a good thing, but if you are accustomed to this type of accommodation you may be a bit let down. This is not a criticism but simply commentary. I believe that my expectations were, in hindsight, unrealistic when it came to this part of the chateau.

Overall it was a nice experience and we have fond memories of our stay. Places like this are unique. If you are looking for a two or three day respite and simply want to get away from everything and relax, i can see this being a great spot to do it.

“Just what a chateau should be!”

Using our trusty GPS,we arrived in the afternoon. We were a bit dismayed as the promised and confirmed room was not available, since its occupants elected to stay longer. We were given another room at the junior suite level and found it to our liking. There was an elegant bathroom with double sinks and all was well lit. The bedroom was very comfortable and beautifully furnished. The property itself is wonderful, with ancient buildings and a moat adding to the scenery. There are all kinds of birds and geese plus three dogs wandering around. -the dogs all friendly. Dinner was good, but not over the top. Service was excellent. They garaged our car and made sure the windows were clean every day. They even mapped out routes we could take to explore this historic area.Highly recommended

Room Tip: Make sure your room has more than one window in it. Those tend to be quite dark.

“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay”

Location is fantastic as were the buildings and grounds. Proprietor and staff were all very friendly and helpful and all spoke excellent English. Nothing was too much trouble. The quality of the food and wine was absolutely excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay and would certainly return. All this comes at a price though - it is not a Premier Inn!

“wheres vault de lugny?”

this must be paradise! moats, goats, gardens, peacocks, a dungeon and medieval grand chateau and the town of espoisses around the corner. there are rolling hills with white cows grazing everywhere. the hosts could not have been kinder and it is no surprise to see the upscale group of backroad bikers also as guests. our intimate dining experience could also be described with perfection!

“An experience to savour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2011

As i've repeatedly said, hotels are like food and wine, very personal and subjective.
We had been here previously and my wife hesitates at returning to the same location.
Yet on this trip,Lynn suggested that we return to the Chsteau - we had such fond memories - and the roaming peacocks and other birds were a major part of this - other reviewers though obviously see them as a sideshow.
We'd previously had a suite and I was slightly disappointed to be "downgraded" - the owners response was "you obviously booked by the internet" and they clearly didn;t bother checking that I was a repeat customer.
The service was probably ordinary and the food was so-so but we didn;t come here for a food experience - it is what it is - and we love it for that.
Vezelay is a wonderful base to explore the Burgundy region and we would certainly come back to the Chateau again and again - hopefully the owners next time remember us and give us a better room.
