“Excellent Holiday - a shame there were Brits that let the side down!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Upon arrival at The Golden Beach Hotel we were greeted by the friendly reception staff who dealt with his very quickly and assigned us a room that we were taken to immediately. We asked for a safety deposit box which was dropped to our room and a small fee of 100 Dalasi per day was charged (£2 a day). The hotel is basic but VERY clean and the staff are so welcoming and friendly and the service was the best I've ever received! The food at the hotel was also very good. A simple breakfast of cereals, bread, rolls fruit, tea and coffee is complimentary, but you do have the option of ordering a full English or variation of this for a small price. Drinks all reasonably priced, better to drink the local beer (Julbrew) as this is the cheapest.

Our holiday was excellent, we experienced many things and met and made friends with many of the locals and for that we were given "local" prices more often than not. It is VERY important to tip any person that provides a service or helps you out as they get paid very poorly - one thing that I noticed, is that it only seemed like it was my partner and me tipping people, other Brits were less inclined to do this - PLEASE REMEMBER, THESE PEOPLE ONLY GET PAID FOR 6 MONTHS OF THE YEAR!!!!

There was one element of the holiday that made me angry, and this was a particular man from Yorkshire, who obviously has SMALL MAN SYNDROME who felt it necessary to complain about everything possible, typically "I want my food served on a hot plate." "I want ice with my beer" "I want to make a complaint about...." He felt great delight in telling everyone that he had a very short temper, and with that he took pleasure in speaking very loudly about muslims (90% of Gambian population) and how he thought they were being brain washed and it was a terrible religion - if you feel like that DONT GO TO MUSLIM COUNTRIES! There was one night I even had to move tables at dinner as I didn;t want to listen to his narrow minded views - what a silly little man!! Nevermind, he was on his own and clearly very lonely, and we only had to deal with him for the time we were in the hotel which wasnt a lot. Please can British people not expect the same level of time management in Gambia than here in Blighty - they have a lot more relaxed attitude, which if you allow this to rub off on you will have an amazing time. As the Gambian's say "Bufale - means no worries!".

The tour operators warn you about Bumsters and only to get into Green (tourist) taxis, and to not make any trips in Yellow (Locals) taxis as they are not insured - this is rubbish! Always get YELLOW TAXIS, they charge you 7 Dalasi for a trip, whereas the green taxis charge anything they like, normally 300-400 dalasi just to the bank and back! Even if you feel safer getting a green taxi, make sure you bargain a better price for it.

Overall, amazing experience, highly recommended and will be going back!

“Still good value for money.”

Third time I have been to the Golden beach, have previously awarded it 5/5 but felt it only deserved a four this time for the following reasons.

Firstly the bar staff around the pool were sometimes not that keen to offer drinks, yes they came around the pool asking but sometimes it felt like waiting for ages then two come in a few minutes.

Secondly I was asked to pay for a cooked breakfast on my departure, credit to the receptionist, as soon as I informed her I hadnt had a cook breakfast she accepted what I said so I didnt have to pay.

Now some good things. Firstly if the manager of the Golden Beach reads these reviews give Lamin (the cleaner) a promotion. He is the nicest, most loyal, hardworking, will do anything for anyone person I have come across in the gambia on all three occasions I have visited. He is an asset to your business/hotel and you should do anything you can to keep him.

Other good points, hotel was clean, pool boys were very helpful and good workers, securtiy guy at the gate was friendly and helped us a few times calling for a taxi.

All in all an enjoyable return to gambia and the golden beach.

“Christmas and New Year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

A great value for money hotel in a lovely location. Our Thomas Cook holiday deal included a Christmas Eve and New Years Eve Banquet, Entertainment and Fireworks. The Manager and his staff are really friendly and helpful and the Gambia is an interesting and a welcoming country that deserves a visit.

The hotel is situated on a lovely golden beach lapped by the warm Atlantic Ocean.

When you walk down to the beach don't miss a visit to the Juice bars and a walk to the monkey sanctuary and Sene-Gambia.

Taxis back to the hotel are cheap but you need to set the price not them. We used the yellow taxis as well as the green tourist taxis without any problems.

Everyone understands English in the Gambia and we found it a great adventure.

Recommended if you like to mix with happy, smiling people.

“Never again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Booked on internet. It said aircon and fridge included. They weren't. Surly, unhelpful manager tried to charge me £5 per night for aircon. Declined. Went out and bought electric fan for £9. Also tried to bleed me for £3 per night for a fridge. Went out and bought one for £30. Been to the Gambia before, and lucky enough to have contacts due to Gambian wife, so know where to shop. This hotel is unclean, dilapidated, ancient and definitely 3rd world. Cheap, yes, but still unacceptable. Cockroaches, ants, broken shower, broken toilet (twice in a week), no hot water any time of day other than early morning, poor lighting, ripped mosquito mesh on window, which also didn't open. That's just the bathroom! Bed dirty, damp, uncomfortable and lumpy. Lighting in main room inadequate. Cleaners/housekeeping erratic, halfhearted and useless. Staff pleasant, but unmotivated and disinterested. Probably due to typical Gambian pittance wages of £8 or £9 per week. So not their fault. Owner, manager culpable. Food vile and inedible, and, inevitably, overpriced. Pool uninviting. Had to carry own heavy, wooden sunbeds to beach, 250 yards. Overall, one word.......unacceptable. I have stayed in many hotels, on 3 different continents. Also 5 or 6 different places in the Gambia. This is the worst, by a mile. Ten miles, in fact. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY STAYING HERE!!!!!! Sleep on the beach, in the gutter, under a truck. Anywhere other than this insect infested, ripoff, depressing, vile cesspit of a "HOTEL!!!????" :-(

Room Tip: DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Under any circumstances. You have been warned!!!

“Fantastic hotel in a great location”

I stayed at Golden Beach Hotel for a week over Christmas and the whole experience was excellent. It's set in a good location so you can have some quiet time if you want or head into Senegambia for the nightlife which is only a 7 minute car ride away. The staff are all helpful and courteous and my room was cleaned to a high standard every day. I would definately stay here again and plan to come back to the Gambia for new years celebrations 2012-2013. I can't wait! Xx
