“The Dorchester it ain't, but if you don't enjoy yourself here, check for a pulse.....”
We spent two nights over Easter at Manoir de Gourlay, which was very reasonably priced indeed. We did not expect a five star hotel - and we didn't get one - but we got a unique and fabulous time.
We arrived tired and in need of a stiff drink after a stressful few weeks at work for both of us. A short and picturesque drive from the ferry terminal at Boulogne, the Manoir is a rambling characterful house, packed to the gunwhales with antiques and curios, oh and a pinball table!! :-)
Not least of the curios (in the best possible way) are Karen and David the owners. No sooner had we got in the front door (and enjoyed a warm and slightly over excitable welcome from Baxter, the house hound.....) than bottles of wine were being uncorked, and glasses pressed into our hands.
After a few drinks in short order, we made out way to our room. We stayed in the balcony room (looking out over the gardens). The room was huge, and the view over the gardens quite lovely.
We had dinner at the Manoir that night, cooked by Karen, which was served around a huge dinner table with the other guests and the owners. The idea of this filled my boyfriend with fear and loathing when I told him, but as it turned out it was (lubricated by several bottles of excellent wine for which we were not charged and some decent filling food and excellent cheese) most enjoyable. We left the table at about 10.30pm, very full and replete with wine!!
And here's the thing, travellers. If you desire a weekend on your own, away from people, with peace and quiet, then the Manoir is not for you. You're very much staying with Karen and David, and they make a massive effort to make you feel welcome. Solitude is not what you'll get though. Be aware that Manoir is in the middle of nowhere, with NO bars, restaurants and NO taxis!!! The dog, cats, chickens and owners and other guests are very much there all the time - but it's a GREAT atmosphere. You can do as you please.
We stayed a second night, and as the owners were at a party we were left to our own devices. We were given free run of the kitchen and made a huge salad and quiche (bought from the local butchers). David's Mum gave us a couple of bottles of wine (which again was not charged for) and we sat in the kitchen with Baxter the dog and the two cats snoring in the corner. Bliss!! We retired to the living room to watch the golf on SKY TV with nightcap.
To sum up, Manoir is a bit of a madhouse, but we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and we will be back. If you don't drink, and find socialising a chore, then find somewhere else - otherwise have a drink and enjoy a quite unique experience - rather like visiting your crazy mates who moved to the country!!
