“Starving in Dumfries”

I stayed here in September. I have known the place for 25 years. It is always Russian roulette staying here and I guess there is some fun in that. Some years it is okay some years it isnt (it was boarded up one year if not two). If you just need a room and a roof over your head for the night and a half decent breakfast this is fine. If you are fishing or shooting it is fine and very convenient. However the Bar - or jokingly the restaurant - food is appalling and the chef/cook should be impeached by the Scottish Parliament. This year was as bad as ever. Stick to a steak or a chop and it will have to had been cooked for you. The draught beer is actually (and surprisingly) quite good. Nothing wrong in that area at all. The menu is about the same as it was 20 years ago, it's just when it was written it was prepared by people who could cook and cared about cooking and pleasing folk. The rooms are basic, functional and that's it. They have a certain 1980s chic that I feel comfortable with even the cracks in the ceiling. I think I stayed in the same room in 2010 that the 2008 reviewer had a problem with the toilet seat in. I think the people who own this place have given up, that was my impression anyway i.e. they would just like to be shot of the place? It's a shame because some of the youngsters who work in the place try very hard to please and bless them for trying so hard. It is still a hub 6pm ish for shooters and fishers and given the number of other eateries in Thornhill they are a captive audience. Poor devils. I will probably go back at some point if only for the entertainment value.

“The Worst Hotel Ever !”

Not very welcoming at all, after ringing the bell a few times and finding a member of staff someone eventually came to the desk but they were clearly on the phone having a chat and wasnt happy at being disturbed. The hotel over booked and one of our party was sent elsewhere,(we had booked a few rooms) they tried to deny the booking even though we had written confirmation. Had a meal, service was terrible - they were pushing the specials, then when we ordered them they only had 1 left !! When we said we didnt have all our meal they said they were going to get it - it never arrived and then argued with us over the bill trying to make us pay for food we didnt have. Think the quote of the stay was "if I knew what an espresso was then I could tell you if we had it"

“Quirky, old fashioned but excellent service and food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2009

I understand both the good and poor reviews of previous visitors.
I love the hotel because it is old fashioned, the service is good and the food is home cooked and really good plus good real ale.
The rooms are old fashioned and there is always something that doesn't work but they do fix it!
However heating has always worked well and so have my showers and the bed is comfy.
You have to undestand that this is a fishing hotel and from Septmeber onwards most guests are salmon fishermen who want good food, company and a comfy bed and aren't worried about the trappings of a modern chain hotel.
Ideal if that's what you want but not for those who expect a modern 3 star hotel.

“No Basil. Just Faulty.”

We went to Thornhill recently to attend a wedding at Sweetheart Abbey. We stayed a night at this hotel as all other possible accommodation was fully booked. The staff were pleasant and helpful.
We had asked for a quiet room and were given one on the top floor ( no lift), a very small roo indeed.
One bedside table lamp didnt work. The TV didnt work. The shower didnt work. The toilet seat hinge soon fell off.
Luckily, it was such a happy occasion that we treated it all as a good laugh. But one night was quite enough.
The previous night we had stayed at the Scaurbidge House B&B, and eaten at the Volunteer Arms both in Penpont abou 3 miles from Thornhill. Both were excellent and we can certainly recommend them

“Fantastic lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2009

We didn't stay here so can't comment on the rooms but we had a great lunch. The lamb broth was wonderful and the service excellent. The hotel staff was really welcoming and by the time we left, we'd been given a fascinating history of the local area by some of the regulars.
