“Loved it and will be back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2010

Exploring the Highlands in Aug, 2009 required a stay in a castle. Kilravock was our choice and my husband and I we were very pleased. We were aware that one could not stay in the castle iteself, but not unexepcted since its 500 years old. Our room was clean, comfortable and had a lovely window to the grounds, which are magnificant. We only had breakfast there but was as good as other B&Bs we stayed in. Staff was very friendly. When I became sick, they suggested and then made calls and found us a local medical office to go to which did not charge us a dime for seeing the doctor. (I only had to pay $2 for antibiotics.)
Castle is located in a beautiful secluded neighborhood just outside of Inverness, with short drives to Loch Ness, Culloden and other memorable sites. Grounds of this castle are gorgeous. You can imagine yourself being part of the various clans who stayed there. The castle will give your trip a genuine highland feel. We will be back to stay at Kilravock with the kids this time.

“Huge Disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

I booked this Castle knowing that it would probably be basic and a more true experience than other Castle Hotels. I also had learned that the property is no longer able to provide sleeping arrangements in the Castle itself. However, we were up for an adventure, we liked that it was run by a Christian organization, and we were certainly prepared for an authentic event. I have to say that the grounds are lovely and you are so far removed from everything else that you can enjoy total solitude. But, be warned that it will be total, as there is no television, no telephone, no internet, and no other interaction with guests or hosts. The room we were given was very tiny, with an even tinier bath, but it was clean. We had a lovely dinner at Cawdor Tavern down the road and settled in for the night. After tossing and turning for hours, my husband and I finally "confessed" to each other that we were both totally miserable. The mattress was so uncomfortable that we had to laugh, thinking that it was possibly left-over from 13th Century straw! We suffered through until daybreak wondering how we were ever going to survive another night since we were booked for two nights. The staff were pleasant enough and we hated to ditch them, as this has never happened to us in the past. Therefore after a mediocre breakast and a less than stellar tour of the very dirty and unkempt castle itself, we spoke with them about whether or not we might be moved to another room due to our trouble with the mattress. I believe the gentleman might have been offended as he said that they have never had a complaint (which I find hard to believe)! He did not try to accommodate at all saying that all the mattresses were the same in every room. He then charged me a fee for checking out a day early! I do think this wonderful Castle has possibilites, but their Foundation might need to take suggestions for some reforms if they are to make money as a B&B.

“An Unbelievable Experience”

My husband and I went to Kilravock to do research for a book that I am writing. Kirk, Titus, and all those connected with Kilravock were so gracious. They had a store of knowledge of Kilravock and the time that I was researching that I would have found difficult to find elsewhere. My ancestors are Roses, and I was treated like long-lost family.

The grounds are spectacular! I was lost in their beauty. I could have wandered the paths for days and days and never tired of them.

The room we stayed in was roomy although the en suite bathroom was a bit small. But truthfully, you aren't here for the rooms. You're here for the experience of a 14th century castle which is what you get while staying at Kilravock. The rooms are cleaner than most "modern" hotels that I've stayed in. Even the so-called upscale ones.

If you are looking for lively night life, then Kilravock may not be the place for you. If you are looking for a place to truly relax and absorb the Scottish culture, then Kilravock is for you. It was for me. I cannot wait to return.

“A Big Let Down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2010

We stayed at the hotel for a night after being to a wedding, and i can honestly say thank god it was only one night. The rooms were not in the castle as we hoped but we could have over looked that. The radiators in the rooms were off untill check out three of the rooms we booked were smaller than we would have liked and as for the decor it was really out dated. The beds were comfortable however. inside the caslte there is a games room with a dart board and a pool table which we though sounded great as guest had full use of it. But however it only had one working light above the door which made playing a non started as well as the eletrical hiccupp there was also no heating in there infact it was a great deal warmer outside. The staff were nice enough although they don't stay at the hotel which can be inconvienent at times. as for the breakfast that was between 8-9 it was the same as the hotel a let down. Also checkout was at half past ten on a sunday morning and a later check out was not possable.
