This is an almost new tourist spot in south Sikkim. Situated at an elevation of about 8000 ft the small picturesque semi town on the Gangtok-Pelling highway, Ravangla is becoming a hot tourist-spot for its breathtaking landscape and tranquility.
Ravangla offers an undisturbed view of the snow ranges of Greater Himalayas. Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Sinialchu, Mt. Kabru are the major peaks that are clearly visible from here. Upper parts of Ravangla experience snowfall during winter. Thousands of known and unknown flowers are in full bloom during April-June and Ravangla gets a romantic look with their colours.
It is also a trekkers' paradiseA 12 km trek from Ravangla through the Oak, Pine, Rhododendron, Magnolia and fir forests will take you to Mainam peak at 10,600 ft. Another 1.5 km uphill trek leads to valedunga, a hilltop offering beautiful view to the surrounding mountains. The entire trek route passes through the Mainam Sanctuary which houses a rare collection of Himalayan species like the red panda, Himalayan black bear, leopard cat, black pheasant cat etc.
During our last summer-tour to the villages of Sikkim,we stayed at Mt. Narsing Village Resort,Ravangla for 3 nights.
The Resort has 2 wings. The Main(lower one)is situated just beside the highway at a distance of 2 kms from the Ravangla town. The Annexe wing is 1 km uphill from the main campus. One have to cross a 1 km steep, stony, narrow path to reach the annexe wing. The entrane of this wing(decotated with stones and tibetan bells) is beatiful.
This campus is more...more... beautiful than the lower one and offers breathtaking scenary of the country-side & snowcapped mountain ranges. You can see some cows and horses gazing around. The campus houses 6 super-deluxe & 3 luxury cottages.Among these 4 super-deluxe cottages are located just inside tea-garden(one side) with various flower plants surrounding the cottages from the other side.
For himalayan bird watchers and photo-graphers this is an ideal place. Also for honey-mooners,,young-couples this is probably an ideal place.
The restaurant of the annexe campus is beautifully decorated in sikkimese style.Food is ok type & limited in varieties as in entire Ravangla town.
Our super-deluxe cottages were spacious, clean, wooden furnished & comfortable offeing view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The adjacent bathrooms have water-geysers.
Though management is poor. The resort is being run by 3-4 untrained village boys & girls. So you should not expect much regarding service, though they are helpful.
The Resort is highly recommendable for its campus itself though it is 1 km uphill from the main-road.The dropping charge from ravangla town to Resorts' Annexe wing is 100-150 INR.
Power cut is a major problem in entire ravangla. The resort has its own generator but due to poor manajement it remains unused most of the time.
The resort also arranges sight-seeing trip & dropping facility on request. As there is no fixed rate,a hard burgaining is advisable. My suggestion is while staying for a couple of days at Ravangla dont miss a short sight-seeing trip to temi-tea-garden & roylang monastery.
Mt. Narsing Village resort is the best located resort in Ravangla. So if you plan for a short trip to ravangla,a 2 nights stay at the annexe wing is highly recommendable.
