“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

Great hotel. We had a charming 3 room "orangerie" suite. Great place from where you can explore the Normandy Beaches. The host, James, is exceptionally helpful. James will gladly spend an hour talking about the chateau, the Normandy Beaches and the surrounding area. There is a charming XIII century small church in the village. A lady living in an adjoined house will be trilled to open it for you and show you around. The breakfast is served in the main room. The marmalade and the cheeses were great. The same room was used by the press just after the landings.

“Absolutely fantastic - will return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

Whilst this hotel is a little bit off the beaten track, if you have a car it is a great location to visit the D-day beaches and sights. The setting could not be better. It is rural and old, but well maintained and James the Inn-keeper was very friendly, speaks good English and was always ready to help make dinner reservations and give directions and tips to visit the sights.

There was no wifi (at least not in our room) or TV in the room, but this isn't the kind of hotel where you'd miss them. There was also no stand-up shower and so you'll need to wash sitting in the bath tub whilst holding the shower head above your head. If this is unacceptable to you, you'll probably want to look elsewhere, but whilst it would've bothered me in any other hotel, in the Chateau de Vouilly it just added to the experience.

Not only would I return to this hotel if I was in the area, we are already planning a return trip solely because we enjoyed ourselves so much. One night was not enough. Everything was better than perfect.

Very clean, very spacious, very romantic, great service, fantastic setting and breathtakingly beautiful surroundings.

“Rich In History: The Best”

A short drive from Bayuex and 20 minutes Omaha Beach, this Chateau was built in the 1350's. A beautiful setting in the country, the Chateau is surrounded by a mote and lovely gardens.
James Hamel, the owner greated us and ushered us to our two large rooms, each with a large bathroom, and views overlooking the gardens and countryside.
Breakfast is served daily in a well appointed room which formally served as the working press room for the US and Great Brittan Press during WWII. Such notibles as Walter Cronkite, Ernie Pyle, Andy Rooney, Earnest Hemmingway and Gen. Omar Bradely had daily briefings and wrote articles from this room.
Breakfast was served with choices of local cheeses, hams, breads with French butter, yogurts, cereal, juices, coffees and more.
James Hamel, and his family acquired the Chateau around 1916. James is a bit of a history buff with pictures and stories of numerous events to share which make up the history of this Chateau.
The bedrooms were large and well furnished.
A short drive to good spots for dinner, shopping and history in general.
We highly recommend Chateau Vouilly for its rich history, superior accomodations and a touch of history from a family that cares.

“A wonderful chateau and charming host"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

We stayed two nights at the Chateau de Vouilly, with our days spent touring the Normandy landing sites and visiting Bayeux. The chateau is beautiful, as are its gardens, and has an interesting history including its use during WW2 by the US Press Corps. The owner and host, James, is a very charming gentleman who gave us a warm welcome, and upon our arrival helped us to book our tour for the following day. Our room overlooked the moat and rear gardens. Each morning, we were greeted in the dining room by James and a table laid with a traditional French breakfast of breads, jams, cheeses, and freshly-squeezed orange juice and coffee. The Chateau de Vouilly was the center piece of a great weekend away in Normandy.

“wonderful!!”

My husband stayed here after having been to the Classic Le Mans and asked Mr Hamel if he could leave his camping gear with him until his return a week later. My husband collected me from Cherbourg port (I didn't want to go to the CLM as I am not keen on camping and all that goes with it!! ) After touring around Brittany for a while we both stayed at this chateau for our last night on our way back to Cherbourg and were welcomed as if we were long lost friends. Both Madame and Monsieur Hamel are the sweetest of people, very helpful and accommodating and they live in a beautiful moated chateau with a huge garden. The rooms were "quaint" and the bed was very comfortable and breakfast was served in what used to be the correspondence room during WW2.
The place is riddled with history - it was a pleasure for us to have stayed at this fabulous place with 2 of the kindest hosts we have ever met . Merci!
