My girlfriend and I stayed at the Racha in late October 2011. Unfortunately we only booked 3 nights, we wished we could have stayed at least 7 nights. Here is a link to a video I did that gives you a little idea of how beautiful it is: http://vimeo.com/35839545
We had an amazing time. We just happened to be on the boat on the way to the island with Gerard, the General Manager. He introduced himself and was very interested in our trip. We ran into Gerard several times during our stay and we struck up several conversations. He was very gracious and was more than happy to talk to us.
Overall, we loved The Racha. The staff was very attentive and more than happy to help us with any request. There was construction going on during our stay but the actual construction noise was never a problem. Being an avid traveler I understand that at times there will be repairs and construction going on. I appreciate when a hotel or resort goes the extra mile to keep the noise to a minimum. Plus, the bungalows that were being built look amazing!
When traveling to The Racha, you have to realize you are going to a very small island. There are no towns or paved roads. You can walk across the island in about 15 minutes. That being said, you have to realize there won't be the everyday conveniences of being on the mainland. I had no problem with an internet connection or phone. So, do your research before going to an island.
The resort grounds themselves were amazing. Once you leave the grounds and venture around the island you will find the island isn't as clean as one would hope. I realize there's not a whole lot The Racha can do about that without the help of its neighbors.
The beach was great. They try to get guests involved to help clean the beach every morning which we thought was great. Obviously, you don't have to help, but it's a nice gesture. We never had any problems with day-trippers on the beach. The pools were amazing so we usually laid by the pool everyday. The use of kayaks for free was great.
It was an amazing experience. Being a filmmaker, actor, DJ, and producer, I travel all over the world and have stayed in my fair share of beautiful and not-so-beautiful places. The Racha is one of my favorite places.
We will definitely return for a longer stay in the future.
