We spent one week in January 2012 at this relaxed, quiet and luxurious boutique resort which does, however, have some draw backs – at least seen with the eyes of an elderly couple spoiled from 15-20 years of vacationing in the Phuket area.
First, the facility is downright ugly. In order to provide privacy each unit is surrounded by 10 to 12 feet high, grey, drab concrete walls. Whether in the room or walking down to the restaurant or beach you feel like in prison.
The rooms are big, the private pool area even huge, but stuffed with useless artifacts, pillows, jars, miles of curtains and what not. There is a baggage stand for one bag only. There is one drawer per person, so there is no way you can unpack a bag, much less two. There is no mirror in the room. The bathroom has a mirror but only one wash basin, no hand shower and a “free view” toilet with no privacy what so ever. Midway we had to change room as the aircon broke down (OK, this can happen anywhere). The new room had two wash basins and two drawers. Further, it had a mirror in the room, located inside a cupboard behind the hanging clothes! Bad indoor architects ought to be sentenced to 6 months’ confinements in one of their own concoctions.
The beach is great but the sand is coarse and the waves dangerous for children. One can walk for hours with very few people around. However, you cannot have a beach chair on the beach, only at the pools. The pool and garden area are very nicely laid out, quiet and with lots of servants bringing water and cooled napkins.
The restaurant serves very good food; breakfast is super, lunch very good, the dinner excellent but the prices (for dinner) are European. The chairs and tables are clumsy (probably designed by the person who designed the rooms). For a hotel/restaurant of this price level, the staff is poorly trained. Everybody is friendly and smiling but something is always missing or different. One day we lack coffee cups, next meal starts without napkins; some days they remember to serve rolls before the dinner and sometimes toothpicks after the dinner, sometimes one gets candlelight, sometime not. Sometimes they forget water. The problem is this: If the servants lack routine, what is the situation in the kitchen, how well is the food cooked and the utensils cleaned? The staff is not to blame; lack of training suggests poor management.
We enjoyed 7 quiet and pleasant days without ever leaving the resort – except for brief bike rides in the neighborhood – but one can get better value for money elsewhere.
