“A very special B @ B Wolsey Lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

Bracken House is a wonderful home full of charm and character.
The dining room, lounge, library are together with the beautiful bedrooms all spacious and extremely comfortable.
But above all Bracken House has two of the most friendly and welcoming hosts Guy and Sue.
Staying with them one thinks that you have known them for many years.
A must stay if visiting a lovely part of the world in North Devon.

“Amazingly Beautiful Location and Five-Star Accomodation”

We have travelled extensively in the UK, as my husband is English and we visit family frequently. I can honestly say that Bracken House (and it's host family) are one of the shining stars we will never forget. Bracken House is like something out of an old Agatha Christie book, you know, the "lovely rose-covered country house". We were warmly greeted by Guy, our host. A cream tea was quickly provided out in the garden patio. On real china. His beautiful wife, Sue, was a joy as well. She is a concert harpist and the "music room" had the loveliest harps in it. We caught a few minutes of her practising. I kept waiting for Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple to appear.
Our room was spotless and decorated with stunning antiques. We had a TV as well as full internet service. The bed was extremely comfy and we both slept very well. The VIEWS from our room looked like something out of a travel magazine. Breakfast was provided as part of the package and was cooked to order by Guy. Delicious! They also have two beautiful children, Katy and Tom. We stayed for two nights, as we were visiting friends in the village. I was sorry we didn't stay longer, just to enjoy the warm hospitality and delightful accomodation of Bracken House. I wish we could give it more than the five stars provided. Would stay here again in a minute!
One quick PS. Their rates, for what they provide, are almost embarrassingly reasonable.( We paid a good deal more to stay at an absolute DUMP previous to arriving here!)

“A tranquil retreat.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

I stayed with 3 teenagers and although Guy was away, Sue and her 2 children were most welcoming. After surfing each day, Sue offered to dry our towels and wet suits - nothing was ever too much trouble.
The rooms were spotless, with crisp white bed linen and sumptuous towels. Each furnished with interesting antiques, books and artefacts.
This is very much a relaxed family home offering B&B with style.

“A wonderful B & B Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

We have recently had a very enjoyable few days in Devon staying at Bracken House. Our room at the front of the house had magnificent views and the acommodation exceeded our expectations. Great attention to detail with everything of the highest standard. Guy and Sue were the perfect hosts . The Cream Tea on arrival was a lovely gesture and breakfast excellent. Nothing was too much trouble!
We are keen cyclists and this location was perfect for the local NCN trails around the beautiful coastline and countryside. We wil be back

“vastly overrated and overpriced”

The Devon cream tea on arrival was truly excellent.
Unfortunately our room was not. On the ground floor to the back of the house very dark and damp, looking into a wet hillside, with a cupboard too small to hang anything in it, a bath shower not working at first and aged carpeting on the floor. The towels were damp for three days, no chance to dry.
A small double bed in a very tight room. To get into the bed one could climb in from one side only. The first impression entering the house was not to our liking either with at least 5 dead flies on the reception floor and many more still airborne. Horses, as a hobby, are ok but please keep the smell and rest of it outside. We would not have stayed there had we not made up with friends.
The breakfast did not help the situation either, look warm tea and the bacon and the eggs were cold and hard every time.
The land lady must have sensed our disappointment but instead of trying to improve (save) the situation she chose to make herself scarce, in fact, invisible most of the time and certainly when we left-- no farewell.
This B and B is vastly overrated. The room rate was advertised at £ 80 (pounds) per night, the special price was 4 for 3 i.e. we paid 240 pounds. We think the max. should be £ 20 (Pounds) per night.
Score: 3 out of ten, mainly for the cream tea and surrounding landscape.

We were sorry to read this latest review which is at odds with the previous ones we have received. The weather was awful during their whole trip and we like guests to give us a time when they would like breakfast and they were an hour late, albeit due to extenuating circumstances. They remained at the table for a long time, which was why the tea may have been cold at the end even though it was piping hot at the start. We were surprised at the comments over breakfast, we pride ourselves on the quality of our breakfasts. Every effort was made to accommodate them and resolve problems when they did appear. We do live in the countryside, which is why our guests come here, and we were surprised that they felt that the house smelt of horses. It is the first time anyone has ever made that comment. We much prefer guests to highlight an issue, if there is one, at the time, rather than complaining afterwards when we cannot resolve it.
