“a tiny remote piece of paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

i stayed at the smuggler's den with a small group of friends. we were all frozen by northeast weather and exhausted and in need of some recharging. somehow, with the houses being literally a couple of steps from our own beach and all the dramatic sunrises and stars and the water hitting the shore, you almost immediately start breathing slower and deeper and your pace slows down and then you somehow not notice that a week went by and you need to pack up and go back to the cold. it probably also helps in this whole vacation-enjoyment deal that the staff is incredibly accommodating.

“The hospitality made this an unforgettable experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2010

I have never stayed anyplace that made me feel more at home than Smuggler's Den. The accommodations were immaculate and the food was great. We were only able to stay two nights but when we left, we felt like we were leaving old friends. Ray and his family and staff are the kind of warm, loving people that make the world a better place. I'm glad I got to meet them and hope I get the opportunity to return for a longer visit. I'd love to see little Akira grow...gotta be good, surrounded by so much love!

“Could not have asked for more!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2009

I have been meaning to write this review for months and woke up today thinking of Ray and Rosa! I could never say enough great things about this family... From the moment we walked in the door, Rosa made us feel right at home. She served us some Belikin beer and we sat and talked to her for HOURS! This woman is the sweetest lady and best cook (even though she will never admit it) and I will always think of her fondly. Shes quite a catch Ray, great job! Speaking of Ray, this guy has built this gorgeous place from the ground up and has some hilarious stories to share. This couple is truly amazing...they are raising their own children plus their AWESOME nieces and nephew. My boyfriend and I had so much fun with these kids, and will never forget them. We decided to spend an extra night there because we loved everything about it. Now, I've never been good at saying farewell, but I actually CRIED when we left! We were all over Belize for 3 weeks and nowhere else came close to being as wonderful as Smugglers Den. Thanks for everything Ray and Rosa! You will always have a place in our hearts! Love, Chelsea and Kevin

“Best hotel experience in my life.”

I've been to a lot of countries, and tons of hotels and hostels. The Smuggler's Den is my favorite experience that I've had. My previous favorite was an expensive hotel in Venice, with my own private canal........but now, I have to vote for The Smuggler's Den.

Do yourselves a favor, get off the beaten track and visit Ray & his family for a few days. If you go to San Pedro, make sure you make it here.

If a person wanted to do a destination wedding, I would say forget the expensive mega-resorts, and rent out this place!

“It was like an oasis; a very pleasant surprise”

This is my favorite place that I have ever stayed. It's no Marriott, but in my opinion it's better. The downfall is that it is about a 20 minute cab ride outside of Corozal so once you're there you don't really wan to leave b/c it's not convenient. The great thing is though if you are prepared you can bring your own food in and cook and eat for a lot less since the cabanas have their own kitchens. There is a restaurant on site where the wife of the hotel owner cooks amazing dinners. They have a bar as well to order beer or well drinks. Fairly priced. The cabana was very roomy and comfortable. There was only one other couple staying there while we were there and we only saw them at dinner and on occasion a couple of other times for a brief moment. It was like we had a private beach to ourselves. Very peaceful and beautiful - about 50 paces from the beach. We watched the sunrise from our front porch. The "hot water" however was luke warm at best but the other couple staying there said they had hot water so maybe it was some fluke. They gave you ice and fresh water upon arrival and were very hospitable. This place is truly amazing for a nice break in your trip or a week-long getaway. Not a place to go and party it up though as you may be the only ones there. . . unless those are the kinds of parties you like. There is sand volleyball there and you can walk through the jungle (bugs may be an issue then though). No bugs on the beach - we LOVED this place!!! Go visit and experience the oasis!
